Hi all,

Both 5D and 7D provides 6.0 mp at max resolution of 3008 x 2000. What size does this resolution equate to? Rather, what is the max size for this resolution to produce good quality images for print media?

I would like to know if at 6.0mp, quality is good enough for eg A1-size posters or even larger format printing.

that really depends how u perceive quality, A1, normally ppl dun see them upclose. so it doesn't really matter... cos from far nice, u go near will see big dots.

also depends on the image captured.

i believe, you can always interpolate the picture to get to the size you want via photoshop, but after the enlargment, you will see big artifacts. unavoidable, den u smoothen, unsharp mask abit... should be alrite...

if you are printing 300 dpi (dot per inch), then 3008x2000 will be equal to around 10inch x 6.67inch, that's the optimum printing. But as DCA mentioned, the printer can interpolate the photo to generate larger size printing which generally are still not to bad even up to A4 or A3 size, for A1 and above, that's hard to say  .

Hello. I've made A2 exhibition prints for exhibition (last yr's Exposure 2005 organised by RJC :bsmilie: ) and the details really hold up well =)

Cheers

Thanks for all the replies. The reason why I asked those questions is cos I might need images for collaterals, posters etc and wondering if 6mp will look pro if I need to blow up the images. The least I want is to get pixelated images for public display!

My designer said we shd get a 10mp digicam but I really wonder if it's too far fetched. To sum up, it's possible to get relatively good quality images up to A1 or A0 size using 7D?

I'm a Minolta fan, and I just don't wanna end up using a 10mp Canon or Nikon system! ;p

Tell ur designer to get a MamiyaZD 22MP and he can have prints as large as those banners they hang outside Sim Lim Square building going by his logic of equation. :bsmilie:

6mp is more than enough... Just don't stand 2cm from the print!!! if people is expected to see picture that close, shoot medium format 6x7 using slide film, scan them.

or shoot in multiple segments and join the images. ;)

Not so simple dude, u need to take care corner and edge distortion from the lenses...

overlap... like stictching maps downloaded from streetdirectory.com ;)
of course thats in the worst case scenario. i've done that for panoramic shots, instead of trying to stitch the edges, i simply took extra overlapping shots, cropped one side, and that solved the problem. :bsmilie:

sticthing can only for static images.. if you are shooting street scape or people, how to sticth?

If u do not stitch but do cropping only, u will need to take an extraordinary number of shots to get a large enough photo at native resolution... cos only the centre of the shot will be largely undistorted.

cool... but wonder how much they charge for such a service... maybe enough to invest in a large format system if you print a few of these? :bsmilie:
no la, print yourself. use the software to rastor/blow up to the size, and print each section individually and join them up.

so a free service? even cooler... hope there's no catch. have you tried it yet?
