not a good beercan replacement

if it stays at f4.5 to f5 until around 180mm still ok. it's 1-stop slower from 135mm onward. using higher iso does not help in getting the wide aperture bokeh look.

Why are you not impressed? It was never advertised or intended to be a high-aperture lens. It's basically a premium version of the 75-300 lens, and at a relatively affordable price-point. It does well in that sense.

Well, it's not meant to be a beercan replacement either... :)

Pretty modest filter thread... 62mm... one lens on my list after I get the A900...

probably the cheapest G lens in Sony's lenses lineup.. expect the colour to be nice nice..!! If i have the money, ill get one to replace my beercan and 75-300.. hahaha.. if i have the money...

Hi, what role does/will this lens fill in your lens lineup?
Quite confused because of the pricing and the lack-of-wide-aperture.

any comments?

Better optics and ssm mechanism?

as you can see the large aperture zooms offered by sony is damn high priced.. example..

CZ 24-70 F2.8 = $2999
70-200 F2.8 G= $3699

So 70-300 G is a good replacement of 75-300 (Priced at $399) yet not too expensive..

remember it's a G!! lens hehe.. cheapest amount all Gs..

not say beercan not good, but ill get 70-300 for it's extra 90mm of focal length!

Because it carries the G moniker, it will have good optics performance... at a price point that is marginally affordable... so it would be a hot ticket for most amateur photographers and hobbyists looking for the biggest bang for buck and some quality glass... I'll probably pick up one once the A900 is launched and I can decide between the A700 and A900... otherwise paupers like me stick with low end KM lenses like the 17-35mm f/2.8-4 instead of the 17-35mm G, Tamron 24-135mm SP instead of the CZ 24-70mm f/2.8 and a KM 100-400 f/4.5-6.7 APO instead of a SONY 400mm G....

yeah guess the SSM will be great, but i'm not at the level to be able to appreciate superior optical quality. still stuck with the mindset that "big big aperture =:thumbsup::thumbsup:"

anyway yeah, sony lens expensive ah!!
you add $1 more to the prices of all their lens, and 7 out of 22 available lens are in four digits hahaha ;p

but then again, all lenses of all makes are expensive too... thank goodness got SuperSteady Shot, so no complains

How often do you use f/2.8? Ask yourself how many shots out of the entire day's shoot you use f/2.8? The DOF is so narrow it's really useful only for very specific situations...

I use f/2.8 quite often on my tamron 17-50mm actually. Yeah very true, the DOF is so narrow that its very easy to miss the focus, but i do like the effect when i manage to snap the focus ;) i'm just shooting for personal enjoyment, so at the moment i feel its ok if i get some misfocused shots here and there :p

Well if u use it that often then it is better to invest in a lens that won't make you tear your hair out when you miss a shot...;)

does anyone knows has it arrived in Singapore ?

As previously mentioned... Early May.

It's here already for sure in the warehouses, and in the SSC training centres.

The lens flower hood look really long
