Agree, at low shutter speeds the "blurring factor" when using the IS is subject movement rather than your handshake. No choice but to bump up ISO.. but IS is still worth it IMHO.

There are still the faster primes like 85 f1.2L, which is 2.5 stops faster than the 70-200 f2.8. So, if 70-200 shoots 1/80s at ISO 800, the 85 f1.2L can shoot 1/200s at ISO 400 or 1/100s at ISO 200.

you lose out on the range and AF speed though..

What about 70-200mm f/2.8L (w/o IS)? Its about SGD1000 cheaper.
I have tried IS many times myself, imo it cant do magic for hand held at low shutter speed.

But the non IS version (2nd hand) is quite rare these days. and it is out of production as well right?

Saved up? Buy now! why wait
Dude... Are such comments really necessary? Do you have to pressure someone into buying something or are you simply just too well off in life that you don't know the pains of saving and parting with 3k of your hard earned money?

actually, i beg to differ.

if you need it, get it. no point dragging on and on, while dreaming you'd that lens. find ways to earn back that 3k and/or use the lens to its fullest and not let the cash go to waste.

eh guys.. i got the f4 yesterday.. decided to used the remaining sum for xbox 360 and a new monitor...still got some spare cash.. if there's a need, then i'll upgrade to the IS eventually... anyway, the according to oracle, the IS version may be too big and bulky for my puny 350D+grip...hahaha.. thanks guys! ;)

Somehow... I kinda agree with you... =)

Although not for every lens... sometimes... its better to satisfy the craving and the urge of passion.... oh well.. it depends I guess... =)

Personally the 70-200 IS is the PJ lens. why?

1) It is long and fast and has IS. This means in the worst light condition, you have the best combination of having one of the fastest lens, being able to zoom in and out, staying away from dangerous situation (stand far far) and having the comfort of IS... so when you are in a crowd, you can still get a decent shot

2) It is big and white and screams I AM A PRO... let me thru. I whipped out a 70-200IS on the streets of NY, and people were saying "look at the pro... is he a paparazzi? is there someone famous around?".....

Anyway the 70-200 IS is also very useful for other things. Personally it is as good as it gets even competiting with the L primes in its range. The only thing the L primes have over the 70-200 IS is weight, price (not the 200/1.8L) and speed.

The point is, if you cannot get the shot with the 70-200IS, chances are you are not getting the shot with any other lens (except when you are in really bad lighting condition that demand high shutter speed.. that is where the L primes come in....)

having both lens (70-200 IS and 85L) and sold off my 85/1.8 recently, i can tell you that while the 85/1.2L does give you higher shutter speed, it is not necessary a good thing.

The AF is slow and the DOF is so shallow, that to get a sharp shot, i need to constantly chimp to check if i nailed the AF. While i might not have moved, the subject might have moved off slightly and affected the focus. Personally, I use the L as a creative tool for its thin DOF not for its light gathering speed. The 85/1.8 on the other hand is way more usable, the AF is snappy and the DOF more tolerable of hand shake and subject shake.

Nevertheless, unless you are shooting indoor sports or rock and clubbing events where no flash is allowed and you need shutter speeds of like 1/250, the 70-200 is fast enough esp with today's high ISO EOS bodies.

Hope this puts things back in perspective. The 70-200 is a very fast lens. The 85/1.8, 85L, 100/2,135/2L and 200/1.8L are just way way faster...

I'm currently selling my 70-200 F4. Intend to upgrade to F2.8. But cannot decide which version IS or non-IS I should buy. I'm going to use the lens to take photos of my family. My daughter is 2.4 years old. She never stays at the same place for long. So I guess taking photos of her could be considered as sports photography?! :D Oh...IS or non-IS... that's a tough question :what:

I can foresee that you will sell your 2.8 lens eventually, be it IS or non-IS.

Sorry dude, I guess that you are wrong.

As a matter of fact, the price of the non-IS has risen by almost $300 since last year.

Discontinued? wait long long...................... ;p

1) Because you are unsure of the characteristic of each lens - pros and cons.

2) Furthermore, the subject(s) that you will be engaging. Hence, what is the lens to use.

3) Based on your current arsenal - 24-105 f4 and 70-200 f4, and yet you find that you can't achieve your objective(s). Is this true? *hint - see Item (2).

No hard feeling ok? Just sharing my thoughts. :)

No hard feelings :) but I've spend 7 years living in Singapore.. I think I got infected by local fewer called "gotta have the best" syndrome :) I can afford f2.8 version and I know I'll be able to utilize its features. So why don't get it.
Besides shooting the daughter, I'm setting up a small home studio.. so I know what I'm doing ;)

The price hike for the non-IS is apparently in Singapore only. Its still the same price everywhere else... probably the demand of non-IS are higher in Singapore?? :o
