7-14 for travel or 11-22 is good enough?

11-22 is about 6mm wider than 14-54. 22mm vs 28mm in 35mm term. thus 7-14 might be an entirely different beast altogether. btw 11-22 is hellavu sharper than 14-54.

Chances that if you don't see me owning it, it ain't sharp! :bsmilie:

Having used both lenses, I would say that their sharpness is comparable.
However, the 11-22mm is a more fussy lens - ie, there can be some flare if you tilt the camera incorrectly. For me, the 14-54mm is more forgiving. Inside castles and museums, I would prefer the 11-22mm as it allows better composition of the ceilings, etc.
For external shots, the zooms gives the photographer more flexibility. One can take portraits too.

I hope I can look / be like Wonder Woman :) Yes, I am her fan too.
BTW, the low yellow building is actually inside the castle compound and most buildings in that era is of this color. This is the castle which Shakespeare set for his play, Hamlet. It was so interesting to roam inside the castle and its dungeons.

The ZD 7-14mm is a useful lens for travel photography. I find that the 11-22mm is sometimes still not wide enough in some situations eg. when you can't move back any further, or when you are in a very big hall or in a cave. Nowadays, I find that 2 lenses wouls suffice most of the time for my travel needs - the Leica 14-50mm and the ZD 7-14mm for normal and wide angle shooting. The ZD 11-22mm is hardly ever used.

Then again the ZD 11-22mm could not have produced these images either in such a situation or with such a look. These were taken with the ZD 7-14mm at 7mm during my recent China holiday trip.

You've re-affirm my view that 11-22mm may not be cost effective to go with my 14-54mm. I mean you only get the extra 3mm for a thousand bucks. 7-14mm is the better combi but it is just too much $$$ for me.

If only there's a cheaper alternative; I don't need the super high grade ones. :(

While the 7-14 is good to have if you have the money, the 11-22 with a photo stitching software does the trick as well, just need a little more work.

look at the lens road map.

olympus is coming out a consumer range of wide angle lens. somehting like 8-16mm..

if 11-22m is not wide enough or versatile...and 7-14mm is too expensive,

Why not consider to partner 14-54mm with the upcoming 8-16mm..?

I used to have a 12-24 tokina on a s3pro which is 18-36mm.

I find the 18mm fov wide enough already for me. For olympus my only choice is 11-22mm. The 7-14mm is too expensive and cannot take filter. With the bulging front element, I don't feel comfortable slinging it without its lens cap. I usually sling my camera without lens cap during my travels.

I am trying to convince myself that 22mm is wide enough by looking at all the famous landscapes by good photographers. I see a HUGE number of them done at 24mm and very rarely do I see any that is lower than 20mm.

I have been asking for the 8-16mm for so long but I don't think that lens is coming anytime soon. Earliest is next year right? Still I think a 11-22 mm range is more useful than a 8-16mm ...

if you sell the 14-54mm and get a second hand 40-150 lens, you get back around maybe $400. So the new 11-22mm will be cheaper lah. And you get a much better tele capabilities.

One of those decisions that I always struggle with outings too. After many strained shoulders (not an excuse to go for massage) and pierced eardrums (from justifiable naggings), learned my lesson to just live and let live. It's now only E1 with 14-54 for ALL my overseas trips (good combination for rain, snow or shine).

Lessons learned were from the time-tested 80:20 rule, maybe 99:01 in most cases. Ended up using versatile 14-54 more than the other weights. Yes, some shots call for wider lens, sometime macro, but how often? Also, sayang to see those infrequently used lens day-dreaming in the dry cabi.

Putting myself in the thread-starter's shoe, I wld think about the the widezoom when I'm there. Afterall, lots of time to gauge the need during the 'long trip'. Supposed to be cheaper in the States too. My sense is that this is not a time-critical decision yet.

Totally agree with you on the 14-54 and E-1 combination. Still I carry 11-22 if I am on a scenic path and 40-150 if to a concert. My 3 lens on all my travels are the 11-22, 14-54 and 40-150.

That's why I am eagering waiting for the new 12-60 and sell off my 14-54. That will give me 24mm wide angle which has been good enough for me. Don't think the 8-16mm will be in my price range though.

Hope the TS doesn't mind us going slightly OT here.

For me, it will have to be the 7-14mm for travelling. I have both the 14-54mm and 11-22mm lens, maybe I do not have the skills but somehow I just don't get the nice saturated colours I like with this two lenses:sweatsm:

one of my pics shot with a 7-14mm 2 weeks ago...

Go for the TT sunfish...http://forums.clubsnap.org/showthread.php?p=3040716#post3040716

Bring along your camera and ask the experts there to help set the camera right. Think it's the setting in contrast and sharpness in the various modes.

Thanks for the suggestion:) . Tried that, shot using same conditions and settings, just don't get similar results in terms of colour.

Yes, it is always a chore to cart so many lenses. It would be great if we have a lens that goes from 7mm-100mm. Also, hope it is not clumsy. Especially in Europe, I found that they disallow big bags and if you start digging into your bag, they will look at you carefully.
In many of the attractions, they make you keep your bags in the locker which makes you panick because you can lost the group while you try to use the locker.

How that is interesting...Wonder how big that lens is gonna be.

you mustn't forget the 12-60 too.. :)

All not launched yet. but the 14-150mm F3.5-5.6 OIS give the reach as well as the stability. So for older 4/3 systems, it may be a bigger deal. Then on my travels only 2 lens would be sufficient 11-22 and this 14-150...add a light weight EC20 = WOW. No need tele lens for birding and beach!!!!;p
