sorry, me know nuts about the sutra......

Tupi Guy, as stated by Scanner above.
It's the Prajna Paramita.
One of the most famous sutras. Equally commonly recited by the Hinayana and Mahayana Buddhists.
It is the basis upon how Avalokiteshvara the Compassionate Buddha, upon introspection, realises that everything is Empty. And yet Emtpiness is Form and Form is Emptiness.

I personally find this big long sutra very meaningful.
But difficult to understand.

Scanner brother.
Every day you bring me more and more surprises.
Maybe it's about time you and I make another trip together.. hahaha....

Sure brother Lim, if I can find time. I have longed been wanting to go for a holiday.:bsmilie:

famous sutras? it just sutras.

Understand and Know is diff from what one can 悟 or how is one "apply".

Being a monk must be a monk with robe or in the temple?

Knowing for the sake of knowing is nothing yet just for the sake of knowing.

Sorry for my ignorant with sutras as i never read.

悟 is never by reading yet living it :)

the 佛祖 dont read to attain the enlightenments. One can look but cant see it. One can read and can never understand it too. One can talk about it yet cant live it.

It's one individual 悟性 for it's life. Everyday you can learn whole lot stuff if one is sensitive enough. Just open the heart big enough to see. Not just about "aiya... this is real world lor... be realistic etc..."

Yes, you are right.
We so often fall into the trap of labelling things as 'famous', when they are but mere scriptures written for the sake of passing down knowledge.

I, for one, have been really not well read.
I believe we should just simply lead our lives in the right way, along the right path.
Being able to recite sutras is of course good. But there are different ways of 修.

For example, many Tibetan rural folks live their whole lives simply chanting Om Mani Padme Hum. Yet they follow the Four Noble Truths, and the Eight Rightfold Paths, in the way they live their lives.

Good point, Tupi Guy.

kekeke me never read a book... not even a mag nor newspaper......

To me, contentment is the most important thing. That's one true happiness.

修? 不可為修而修,不可為修而悟,悟而不而修而悟。

Just wonder, you know what the meaning of 捨得?

If you understand, sutras is what Buddha said. One of the purpose to recite sutra is to 消业.
It is difficult for anyone to understand if you don't recite or practice.

If you are really interested, I believe you could search for any Buddhism forum which discussed in English.

Everyone has to start from somewhere.;)

Well... you don't know only mah...
Who knows when I am 休-ing, one may never know that I could actually be 修-ing at the same time.
A idea that is very similar in nature with your very own words, right, Tupi Guy? :bsmilie:

No lah... I only act blur lah.

I of course understand what you mean. Simply, if one has 佛性 and 佛心, and opens up one's eye to look at the world, one can learn to understand 悟, without needing to read too much.

I also understand what scanner means. scanner advocates reading scripture 念佛 and recitation 咏经 so that one may accumulate knowledge. And this process accumulate merits 修善业. This is of course, widely practised by 出家人 and many 在家居士.

One has to realise that as human, we are all markedly different.
I believe everyone accumulates merits and acquires positive karma (for that matter, negative karma too) in very different ways.

I am one who is somewhere in between Tupi Guy yourself and my good friend scanner. I believe in reading. However I am lazy and I don't have a good brain with good memory. Thus though I read, I can't retain too much, and my understanding is not high.
But whatever little I read, I gain some insight and pointers to direct me towards a more correct direction for me to practise. I believe in instrospection 自观自觉 to meditate on the meanings.
Thus I cannot say 'don't need to read' because I have realised that reading has propelled me further in my search. I would certainly encourage newbies to read.

On the other hand, my laziness and poor aptitude in grasping complex ideas have made me a poor candidate for scriptures of deep meaning. And I tend to give myself excuses that - ok, I hope with whatever little 佛性 I can lead my life in the right way to accumulate positive merits, reduce my negative karma, and one day attain Nirvana.

Maybe in this manner, you all can jokingly label me as walking the Middle Path 走中道.
