600D or 60D

Even XXXXD (1100D) can do what you have stated... and with great result too... can even take video if I am not wrong. So it is really up to your own preference... As for me, I like the XXD and XD ergonomic more so I would get the XXD or XD series, rather than the XXXD and XXXXD... And I like more frame rate (7D had 8fps) because I like to shoot sports too.

That I have to agree..... using it to take my boy.... so actually more than sufficient.... anyway got myself a used 40D and 17-85 to start off.... will save up for better glass...... :lovegrin:

I'm using 50D for taking pics of my baby... other than being limited by focal length... i don't feel being limited by the body at all. I dont need super high burst rate to capture every single tiny moment of my baby... so i'm still good with my 50D... considering you might have too much money on hand to spend and the fact that you are upgrading your lens, just go with 5DMII.

Did though of getting 5D MArk II (2008 model), but rumours saying that new one coming out next year so....wait loh

Was thinking of getting 7D but knowing that new model coming out next year, so was holding back. Getting one for temporary use.
Will be upgrading my 50mmf1.4 to f1.2 lens, mostly take my baby photo..
Use it for last year spain trip still find 550D missing of something, next month going to USA so was thinking of getting a new body.

Hi Kelvinmark,

You have already own a very decent setup to capture the moments of your child.

In fact we shared the common interest of photography, I am documenting my daughter's stages of growing up with a 60D, 17-55 F2.8 and 50mm F1.4. There is no wrong to have a desire to own something different (pure human nature). Honestly I have a desire of "I wish" to buy a Sigma 30mm F1.4 but I will hold back and wonder if it is really necessary. We should learn to control the camera, a more expensive and advanced camera do not guarantee an award winning shoot.

The art, thoughts and moments are priceless which money can never buy.

Try reading this blog post from a renowned local fashion photographer of how she start up with her career....400D and kit lens to create all her blown away images.

I have the 40D and aiming to have the Tamron 17-55mm, 50mm f1.4 and maybe Sigma 30mm f1.4... also using it to capture my Boy.... was also thinking of going up to 60D but later decide to save up for glass first....

Bro. Tamron only come out with 17-50mm lens while Canon came out with the 17-55mm.

Either one is good though. I would go for Tamron's 17-50mm for the price and decent image quality... But now I am more into primes.

I guess those are the common range which many people will consider when shopping for a lens but I think the most important factor is up to individual workflow. My setup usage:

Canon 17-55 F2.8
Love this lens for its sharpness and speed. Very handy when you are shooting in a packed environment or moving around.

Canon 50mm F1.4
I prefer to shoot without bothering the person and try not to attract someone's attention to look at my direction...call it journalistic. Nice range for me to keep a distance from my child so that she will not know I am shooting her. But it is a very tight lens when space is a problem.

Thoughts of getting a Sigma 30mm F1.4
To solve the tightness issue on the 50mm F1.4 and fits my budget.

Oh yes, my bad.. shouldbe 17-50mm..... last time I am also prime person.... but now I needed zoom for my usage....

Thanks for the comment, just got my 60D love it. The focusing is faster and more acurate than the 550D. Will play with it on the coming STGCC event

Hi Xest, could you share your reasonings why you did not regret getting 60d over 600d?

I went for the 600D initially and sold it after a week of usage and went for 60D. 60D is faster/more accurate in focus due to the 9 corss type VS the 1 cross type in 600D. The built of 60D also feels slightly better might be just a placebo effect trying to convince myself that the extra $300 is worth for the 60D ba. :D

Mainly reason stated by th3keeper. But the main factor is the grip, it is so much more comfortable to grip for long period. Bought a chapalang handgrip to fix on and it doesn't feel heavy at all especially with the nifty fifty - handle like a PnS (weightless). :cool:

Don't waste your time and money on a 600D or 60D go get the 7D !!!

If u still taking baby photos, u don't need fast fps ! They are not running around yet right.

If must upgrade body now, go for 7d directly.
But .... It will NOT give u better pictures.
Suggest u upgrade lens first, then when 7dmk2 or 5dmk3 out, then change body.

Ef 17-55 -> 16-35 L
Ef 50f1.4 -> 50L
Ef 50-250 -> 70-200 f4L

Forget third party lens, including sigma 30/50f1.4
L lens DO make a BIG difference, if u can appreciate it.

Was thinking of upgrading my EFS 17-55, after going to STGCC find that very hard to take close up from distant. Any recommendation... Dont mind L lens as will upgarde to 5Dmk3 when it launch next year.

70-200mm f/2.8 IS. Mai Tu Liao :D

On a serious note, I guess you are looking for a telephoto lens. What is your budget?

24-70 :)
But may not have enough room (on crop) to let you maneuver around in places like STGCC (esp when everyone is crowding on a character)....

I'm with you on this. I got a 60D just few months back .. and now I regretted not getting 7D.

So, go all the way to 7D, if you do not mind the weight, it's about 200g heavier.

Next year they are launching version2 of 7D, so got something cheaper. Will wait for the new model to come out, mostly will sell off the 60D (bought 5years warranty) so should be easy to sell. Will upgrade to 5D MKIII next year if it launch.
Went to check 70 -200 F2.8L IS UMS cost about $3400 is this a good price?
Some photo I took at STGCC. http://community.dannychoo.com/post/en/349/Cosplay+from+STGCC+Singapore+2011.html
