I think turning on the lcd panel light does affect the metering. No argument there.
Just curious. I normally meter when i look through the vf. Only time when i turn on the light is to change some other setting and not to meter the scene again. Unless one uses the creative modes where the cam determines the exposure.
Btw one third difference that can totally destroy an image is quite rare. To keep exposure consistant use manual mode. Even without light leak problem, all cams will give inconsistant exposures for seemingly same lighting.

I am actually surprised by Canon's stance on this. Why own up to something so ridiculous and trivial? I think something must be quite wrong. I suspect their grip on the camera market share is slipping. We'll see...
Let look at light leak from a different perspective. If we use lens hood to prevent undesirable reflected light or stray light, how about light coming through the LCD when it is on, when sunlight hits the LCD. It is 1/3 ev, does it matter?
If you do shoot with LCD on or when sunlight hit the LCD, you get extra light (1/3 ev). This extra light doesn't come from the object you shoot but from the LCD, does it matter?

Out of point already lah, clearly, the problem here is not what you are thinking it is...not that you will get 1/3 stop less in practical usage, but do you know how insignificant is 1/3 of a stop? Even on evaluative metering, black object vs white object can cause a difference of 2 stops in metering. That is how significant is 1/3 of a stop.
1. Lens hood is for flare prevention. We use a hood not to prevent flare in the viewfinder, but the final image. Light leakage here affects metering, not the photo. Anyway, more light will leak in through the viewfinder than you think.
2. Haven't been able to replicate that 1/3 ev change in bright day light. Please make a video of it if you can...so I can try. Anyway, even if it does, the light doesn't affect the image, the light affects the metering...but then if you are using the metered reading, you probably have got more significant issues to worry about than the 1/3 stop here...

This is very true..especially at night..Just need to shoot in burst mode and you'll see all the shots exposure are not the same even though they're within a few milliseconds apart only.
this is due the the slight variation of the opening and closing of aperture and shutter, more prominent when using higher shutter speed and smaller aperture setting, the major issue of causing flickering in timelapse photography.

That is why after waiting a few years for a new or upgrade model to come, I don't mind waiting a further few months more for all the kinks to be worked out before I will get it on the second or third batch.
Infact if I am not wrong so far almost all new models have some problems - some major but mostly minor.
