5D Mirror Drop Out

I'll be traveling on an 18 day trip to China in about 10 days time with a 5D. Is there any way to ensure that I won't face this problem during my trip? My poor trip leader had his mirror fall off his 5D on the very first shoot of our 12 day trip earlier this year. Luckily he had a backup of a 10D but what a let down. I'll really do anything to make sure this problem doesn't arise with me. My 5D is only about 4 months old but has Canon fixed this problem? (I'll be renting a 20D as a backup for this trip in case of a similar problem!)

Better bring a backup cam. Get Canon to inspect it forst before your trip.

No offense, but this is a ridiculous theory. Before the digital era, Canon's top of the line SLR was the 1V, and it costs (merely?) half the price of the 5D (introduced at ~$6.5k?). The 1V was reputed to be able to survive any condition, and now Canon cannot glue the mirror of a six thousand dollar camera in place?

i wonder if we 5D users can unite and storm into Canon Service Centre and demand a free 'preventive-reglueing'? Certainly, having the mirror drop out in the middle of a job is unacceptable, even if they reglue it back for free afterwards. "A photographer is only as good as his last job."

Shall we organise a trip down to CSC? I'd be glad to join

....imagine if you were using it for an event without backup when this happened.

I wouldn't shoot an important event without a backup. Heh.

If not wrong i remember mine having this prob with my 300D using for ard 3years liao..

The spring mechanism of the shutter is broken thus causing can't focus & i continue using manual focus till the mirror drop out..

yup.. I heard about this case on a 300D before... Let me find that person :sweatsm:

Wow. I am contemplating to upgrade to 5D later this year, after reading this thread I feel very  It is incredible that such serious problem can occur in Canon's pro series DSLR. *sigh*

well I think Canon will add more glue or find other remedies for later batches of 5D

This should not hinder you from considering 5D.. it is a wonderful camera...

I second miniultraman. After flipping through pictures taken by others, coupled with L glass and second to skill, 5D is a real gorgeous camera that can achieve stellar portraits and mood shots.

Just my two cents worth from being a regular user. Having graduated to 5D after using a 350D digital rebel, this piece of equipment seemed like a beast, in the end have to learn how to tame it. Use it to your advantage.

If you're pushing the threshold by firing away relentlessly, trying to capture fireworks or extreme sporting action, then it's no wonder why this equipment will fail (or fail sooner than allowed). Encountered no problems before loaning it to my friend. No more problems for me either after Canon's servicing. Focusing is cool. Mirror is intact. Photos retain the same quality. In short, don't use it cluelessly, avoid mishandling, carry a spare body on assigments and all is stress free.

IMHO, enjoying the ride is more important than fretting over equipments. Hehe... :D

I like it for noise control too. Gives you a versatile edge, especially when shooting in ambient light.

Disclaimer: No offence intended to those who think otherwise.

I thought this is a pro series?

The 5D is a semi-pro body. Only the 1-series cameras are professional series bodies.

The pro series of FF is 1Ds mk2 and it cost $12.7k! 5D vs 1Ds mk2 is like 30D vs 1Dmk2n (not mk3 yet)

Interesting analogy.. if compare this way.. 5D vs 1Dmk3 will be similar to 30D vs 5D

a friend of mine bought a grey set and the same thing happened. local canon repaired for him citing its factory fault and no questions asked

If the mirror were to drop, won't it scratch the sensor? If it really does, then will CSC change the sensor for free?

I think just don't worry about it and enjoy shooting... To be safe.. bring to CSC to check before any important events coverage... Well.. anything can happen.. even sky can drop :bsmilie:
