Forget about mirror lens if you want to shoot birds and get sharp results. you will need a prime lens to achieve that. I am deaming that one day I will own a 500mm prime.drool.

ya lo.. thats one of my dream too :sweatsm:

I know of one birder who is using this kind of setup. Pretty good results I must say.

who who? :bsmilie: aiyah.. i wanna get a cheap n long focal length telescope leh

Yup, it's that lens. #1 is a full photo, never cropped.

bro, you're getting pretty nice sharp shots from this big lens. handheld or tripod? 400mm is really something...

Haha..

the mirror lens if not handled properly....will sure give soft image.
I personally used the 500 lens...and its "easy handling" beats any other long lens.
Its f8 aperture i think is sweet enough for its purpose. And unique about the minolta copy is the AF. ZERO chromatic aberration.

Need to be aware of the older lens (if you buy from the web) that may have minute fog on its inner mirror surface that results in soft images. Applies to older lens like thefirst gen APO G's too.
Through, age, these lens will have fog deposit on them that may need physical "scrub".

my kakis dont believe that this was taken with the 500mm mirror. With a little background control on highlights,
the output form this lens.......may be mistaken for one that was taken with true prime ....

a monopod was used, my hand not so steady for whole afternoon shoot. This heavy lens really need a monopod or tripod to work on

For 500mm and above (or 100mm add 1.4x TC), to get really sharp shots, I think tripod (& mirror lock up) is necessary if the shutter speed is lower than 1/500s, whether AS on or not  .

this 500mm mirror lens is not a prime lens?

Sigma 800mm F5.6 EX APO :sweatsm:
Sigmonster (Sigma 300mm-800mm f5.6 EX APO DG) better. Can zoom out for framing. 800mm can be too tight if the bird is nearer to you. And extremely narrow FOV.

Agreed. Seen some great pics from this lens but unfortunately, it is not available in Sony/Minolta A mount.

Sigmonster is something to drool for the A-Mount, even if you have the cash......

Wow, knew that monster. Anyway I'll stick to my 400mm prime plus 2x TC (800mm / f13). And also a 500mm capable lens.

Got a quote for the Tamron 200-500mm at $1630. Bigma is around $1850 and Sony 500mm at $1150(it think?). Seems like the Tamron is exciting me most. I don't think I'll use any focal range less than 300mm for birding. I won't expect birds to come by close anyway.

Ancientmariner, your pics using looks ok but are cropped. Wish if you had the full version. Thanks anyway for sharing.

Tested someone's copy before (Canon mount), extremely sharp...almost comparable to prime sharpness. But its extremely heavy and bulky lens...difficult to bring around. But the reach is unbeatable. Sigma should have also provide a "porter" service for this lens. :bsmilie:

For Sony A/KM mount ...its tough lar...choices not many. The only big gun that has the same kind of reach is the KM 600mm f/4...but it costs a bomb...perhaps even more than Nikkor/Canon equivalents. Your Tamron 200-500mm is a good lens...can try using a Kenko Pro 1.4x TC on it...still quite sharp (not sure if its available for Sony A/KM mount tho).

Hiee Pals...

Here is a shot at lunch today in the haze...at labrador park...

The full versions have been transferred to CDs. So I am posting the following pics as they came out of the camera, only resized for web, without cropping or processing except for a watermark:

All taken at 500mm zoom. Hope these are helpful.

I was unable to find a Kendo Pro but have tried the Tamron with other 1.4X and 2.0X TCs. Not happy with the degradation of image. So have to try to save up to get the 600 or 800mm.
