580EX MK II or 50mm f/1.4

I heard bad things about the quality of the 50mm f/1.8 as they say that it is flimsy. It's just that I have about $750 to spend and I am thinking on what to buy next on my wish list.

Wish List:

580 EX MK II
EF 50mm f/1.4 USM
EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM

Honestly to me, it seems you have some money to spend but you don't quite know your specific needs. Do you foresee yourself actually shooting for money?

You mentioned for family and friends. In that case, I assume you won't be put in a position (like photojourns) where your equipment can and will be bashed, so why would you be so uptight about the 50mm f/1.8's flimsiness?

Heck, I've been using a 50mm f/1.8 II for more than a year, and I'm not entirely gentle with my stuff (not violent, just not delicately careful). It hasn't fallen apart.

A lot of us here own the f/1.8II version, and no it's not really 'flimsy' per say. Just not at all solidly built. It's the cheapest lens in the Canon lineup anyway.

You probably won't need the features of the 580EXII if you're going for simple portraits and candids, but it'll definitely help if you ever want to upgrade.

Why'd the macro lens suddenly pop in though? You interested in macro photography?

I am also interested in macro, but I would be taking more candid shots than macro. I just added it in my wish list in case I would have extra money...

Honestly there's no point having lenses in a wish list just 'cause you happen to have extra money. You don't see people buying extra food at lunch, just 'cause they have extra money.

If you don't need it, then don't purchase it, or it'll end up as a white elephant.

I don't see myself shooting for money. I just read reviews on the comparison of 50mm 1.4 and 1.8 that's why I'm leaning towards the 1.4. I just don't want to buy another lens in case I am not happy with the 1.8.

I added it in my wish list also as it would have a dual-purpose. I heard this lens can also give you good results for portraits. Is this true?

You'll be happy with the 430EX + 50mm f/1.8II

But you said S$750 right? You can get the 580EXII from mass orders here at clubsnap (grey sets, no warranty) for about S$650, leaving you with S$100 (just add say another 20 bucks and get the 50mm f/1.8II)

Either the 430EX or 580EXII + 50mm f/1.8II is more cost-effective than the 50mm f/1.4 alone tbh.

100mm macro can be used as a portrait lens too, but more for the usage on full frame bodys. On APS-C, it becomes 160mm in equivalence, a bit too long for your family or friends shooting (i suspect that most of time you shoot them indoor)

And trust me that, 50mm f/1.8 II can give you very very good and sharp images. I compared it with my other L lens (17-40, 24-70, 70-200 F4IS), none of them can beat the 50 f1.8 in sharpness. And the only thing that I see the 1.4 version outperforms is the USM motor.

Thanks for the info :)

Thanks for all your inputs :) I am now leaning to buy the flash. I am now also considering the 50mm f/1.8 as well :)

I'll go with the 580EX 1st. hell of a difference when you shoot with the speedlite.

Isn't the choice obvious?

One is flash while the other is a lens. Two different items for different purposes / usages, etc.

You have already owned the EF-S 17-85mm and EF 24-105mm f4L, there is no urgency to get the 50mm. You mentioned that you like to photograph candids and portraits. Further down the posts, you are referring to friends / family kind of gathering such dinner, wedding, birthday party, and not "portraits" that most people will think of. Choosing between a lens and a flash in this instance is an obvious choice.

Best of all, you do not have an external flash unit. This makes the choice even easier, isn't it?

Your built-in flash from 30D may not or insufficient to cover the area(s) that you are photographing. It depends on the subject, distance and coverage area. As such, you need a more powerful flash unit.

Get the 580EX. If you have more money to spare, then buy lenses.

in this case, you dun need 580ex ii actually, 430ex is more than suffice. and the amount you saved can buy yourself a 50mm f/1.8

Dun waste money..... very soon you will upgrade to 580exII

Wish List:

580 EX MK II

EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM

i cant advise you what to get first.. i have all of the above within a month of each other...

anyway.. first hand price would be around

580ex II - $720
50mm 1.4 - $565 to $595
100mm 2.8 macro - $797

personally, i find the 50 f1.8 good for its price.. looks flimsy, feels flimsy, has a plastic mount, but it stands up to usage... neednt worry about it if u aint the type to trash your equipment.. bokeh is nice also

i sold the 1.8 as i found it a bit too slow to AF, plus i 'die die' wanted the 50 1.4 since the beginning (just an excuse) ..

Going by the equipments you have right now, I think an external flash will make more of a difference in your shooting. If you are taking a lot of group photos of family and friends indoor, you'll find a flash much more useful. Also you may find using a large aperture of f/1.4 to compensate for lowlight more of a hinderance as you will find the DOF too thin, especially for group shots. Play around with an external flash, like bouncing the light or diffusing the light, can produce quite natural looking photos.

Use the balance of your budget to grab a 50mm f/1.8 if you really want to play with a large aperture prime lens. You may find that a prime is not your cup of tea, and you can sell it off easily with minimum losses.

Why 580EX over 430EX? I know it has some sort of master control and it can recharge very fast. But, my 430EX is recharging very fast too.
