50mm lens recommendation.

There is also a few more cheap alternatives if you like Nikon lenses. AF/AF-D/AIS 50/1.8 is sharpest lenses in its class and really cheap (around 100-140 BnS). Its light weight (except the ais which is metal built) with manual aperture. The 50/1.4 is sharp at the center even wide open but soft at the corner which needs to be to stopped down to around f2.8. having said that, if you need a 1.4, you need the 1.4.

can rec 50mm to use on A77?
for protrait and bokeh purpose.
TQVM!

50mm f1.8, Sony has the best 50mm according to some reviews

SAM 50mm/F1.8 rite?
is the DT 50mm the same thing but different name?

it's the same lens. DT is just the term for lenses designed specially for APS-C sensors. the actual name is SAL50F18

Yah which 50mm? I have the DT 50mm f1.8 lens. I don't think it is sharpest in class. Lose to the pictures taken with my cz1680 even I feel.

you're comparing $300 whiskey to $1300 whiskey dude. sharpest in its class is referring to other 50mm primes offered by Canikon. and other similar low-priced prime lenses

yea pls compare... apple to apple. Reality hurts. In most cases at least...if the $300 can perform on par or better than a $1300..
then... the world is indeed changing.

Ok my apologies :)
I'm actually thinking of changing to a better 50mm lens. Any recommendations for anything below 1k? New or resale.

Considered the Sony 50 f1.4? Or the Minolta 50 f1.4? Both should be cheaper than Sigma 50mm but only draw back Minolta is screw driven but the Sony should be a good.lens also.

Careful with Sigma lenses when using DSLT only get those.certified working with SLT or.newer batches

Thanks guys will check out the recommendations!

As Bro Anthony has suggested, how about manual 50mm primes ?

You want CZ IQ and prized below 1K ...only solution I know of are the old MF 50mm primes from Ebay.

SLR magic been doing good things but somehow i still wish to pay for a F1.1 Nokton Voigtlander than theirs . Just my feeling on the brand.

U can try the sigma 30mm f1.4

sigma 50 f1.4, it sells more ex than canonikon or sony for a reason. unless, u go for MF, then u can choose Zeiss or Leica.

this is reply to ralfale

Hi all,

I'm currently using a NEX-5N and would like to probably get a 50mm lens. I don't mind getting old lenses but would probably also need advise to which sort of adapter I can use.

My budget is nothing above $500. :)

why 50mm? SLR 50mm lens r designed as multi purpose lens but obviously u cannot do e same thing on NEX.

plus, most SLR 50mm + adapter will be as big as ur NEX 1855.

why not consider voigtlander 40/1.4, 35/2.5, leica 40/2, konica 40/1.8

i am using my nex5n with a voightlander 28mm ultron with focal length of 42 mm. like b2yao says...voightlander or rf lenses are very good choice...some of them are small like the 15 heliar.
