I guess it depends on the staff attending to you. I've sent in pns, dlsr and lens for servicing on several occasions. Some of the front counter staff asks for receipt while some don't. Perhaps Jennyfur80 met the staff who goes by the book.
Looking at the online warranty, its the consumer who enters the data and is open to abuse - some may post date the purchase. To be on the safe side, an official receipt will be your best bet.
Just one explanation to the counter staff will do. Tell them your receipt was a thermal paper one, faded to a blank piece of paper after a few months. Which is very true, I bought a Speedlite from a departmental store and the receipt now can hardly see anything and I did not register online, so is my speedlite still under warranty if I did not register?

I had also bought some items from Sim Lim with undated receipt, is my product warrantied till I fill in the date?
