the number of blades inside the 1.4 are more than those of the 1.8 right? correct me if I am wrong..

But personally, looking off the LCD shows no difference. However, differences can be spotted on the monitor itself and I personally had compared both..1.4 is sweet

Not to be bias, I myself am using the 1.8 coz I find no reason to spend another close $200 for the 1.4..
and one more lens element...

and the optics are glass as compare to the plastic of the 1.8?????

If you already have the 1.8, I don't see much point buying the 1.4 for that small difference in f-stop. Not sure if there is any significant difference in quality between the 2 lenses. I have been using the AF 50 f/1.4 (non-D version) since 1991- only issue to me is that pics taken at 1.4 are noticeably softer. But when mounted on a DSLR, you get a 75 1.4, which to me is the ideal range for portraits. I personally don't like lenses above 100mm as I prefer to be close to the subjects to be able to assert a greater degree of control.

For now, might as well hold your horses - Carl Zeiss may be announcing a 50 1.4 Plannar for the Nikon F mount (the "ZF" mount?) later next week.

eh my 50 1.8 is made in japan.....hahahaha

anyway

for tt half stop difference...or is it 1/3 stop..... i tink pushing up iso will be a better and cheaper option for alot of the dslr users...

cheers..

Point to note:
50mm f/1.8 & f/1.4 used to be made in Japan. In fact the earlier f/1.4 uses a metal body instead of the current plastic one.

BUT the current stock in the market all from China and plastic body :( Worst still... it comes with the ugly looking white transparent rear lens cap! :(

Is there anyway to get the made in japan stock?

Hard to get nowadays I think? I got mine 50 f/1.4 4yrs or so ago. I don't even know the newer batch is made in China. Looks like the chinese is really beating the entire world production powerhouses! Cheap but good workmanship as we all can see.;p Rise....! China....! Rise....!
