quality/optic different? big?small? distortion? vignetting?

thanks.:)

Nikon 50mm/1.8 cost around $140 and the f/1.4 version cost more than 3 times as much around $450.

The difference (at least for Nikkor lenses) are that f/1.4 are faster (but softer), uses more glass elements (so maybe very slightly bigger than the f/1.8), possibly not easy to manufacture which accounts for its high price and low numbers of stock in the market.

Both lens are great optically with hardly any distortion.

I think I'll answer you on the MML (Minolta Mailing List). This way, if I make a mistake, someone can correct me. ;)

IMO, both are good enough if you don't have any specific requirements.

Don't worry about it. When you have >2000 members, the chance one of them cannot stand simple mistake is very high. ;)

I think you just did a 1.7 - 1.4 to get 0.3. However, this is not usually done because the scale is not linear.

I did some search on the website just now. Seem that 50mm f1.7 is not bad at all.

I think I'll get this baby.

HIee..

Just to share,......this lens (50mm f1.7) should be about 150 to 180sgd.

Good for low light,.....

Its a great "always on the cam" lens....and you will be surprise how well it perform for candid quick shots....as in AF mode is very fast...and its easy to just shoot not even looking through the view finder in "steal shots".....

with a 2x teleconverter.....its a 100mm f3.5 (still fast enough)

regards,
me

I have a Minolta AF50/1.4new. I bought it from CP at the price S$330. Now the price should be S$315.
Very good lens. Superb! It is a very good buy.
The MA 50/1.7 is S$185.
The difference of price between 1.4 and 1.7 for Minolta is not so big as that for Nikon. So I think that you should buy MA 50/1.4. The aperture of 1.4 is very useful for weak-light shooting.
So fantastic! you will like it!

so far wat i have gather :

f1.4 is

1: faster
2: super bokeh with 9 rounded bladed aperture
3: sharper from 1.4 - 2.8. after 2.8, sharpness is the same.

I'll think I'll get f1.7 , thanks for all your inputs.

9lives,

Bought mine f1.7 from John 3:16 at $120.00 about 1 month ago.

just for the metal mount and better construction, USM and that 2/3 stop.

Hi ninelives

curious to know - how do I know which lens is good for what?

e.g 50mm guess is a prime lens, so it is good for macro? portrait? landscape?

lenses that are 24mm are good for shooting ...?

thanks :)

50mm is known as a "normal lens" etc, what a human normally sees through his eyes. Macro? Nah, you'll need marco lens/extension tube. Portrait can make it, due to shallow DOF (f1.4/1.8), but many pros prefer using something around 80-100mm range for even shallower DOF.

24mm is considered wide angle. Shoot landscape, or for these "subject right in front of you but cannot move back due to blockage" moments. ;p

it is a "walk-around" lens. it is a "street photography" lens.
