hmmm, see your budget and get the lens at your budget , be it a 1.8, 1.4 or 1.2

should be Jan 2008~~ is it on the 1st Jan?

Sorry for being OT-ing.

To the TS:
1/. Google 50mm 1.4/1.8 from internet.
2/. Go to the shop and try,
3/. Decide which lens you would buy.

The three points listed above do justify the price difference between the 50mm f/1.4 and f/1.8. These two lenses serve two very different markets also.

You should read the reviews to know more about the difference in image quality between the two:

f/1.4: http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-50mm-f-1.4-USM-Lens-Review.aspx
f/1.8: http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-50mm-f-1.8-II-Lens-Review.aspx

Ultimately, if you have enough budget, get the f/1.4

thanks for the links...the F1.4 color/bokeh seems much better than the F1.8 in his reviews...to me that justifies the price difference...:)

The 1.4 got FTM, but the 1.8 dont have. To some the FTM is pretty useless but it's pretty useful to me. Just me ;)

think the quality of the f1.8 also quite good. just got one for my sis today :p

go shop and try both lens and compare focus spd and sharpness ,if ya can't really tell the diff. then go for the f1.8 ?
and the focus noise...

TK has the made in Japan version(about SGD 150 +/-) of the f1.8... other places is mostly the made in Malaysia version(aboud SGD 125 +/-), both optics should be the same, another diff is, the made in japan is printed on the lens whereas the made is malaysia is only printed on the box !!

fyi - pic taken with the 70-200 f2.8 hee :p

I personally feel 50mm 1.4 is value for money if you are going for 50mm 1.2L then ill suggest you getting 85mm 1.2L instead.

the difference is pricing is very great~~:sweatsm:

Still the 50m f1.4 is only about $500 new. Consider cheap.

Those who cant see the obvious better performance of the f1.4 over the f1.8, you really need to go for lasik. ;p

50 f1.8 does the job well enough. get the 50 f1.4 if u want a better lens with faster focussing, smoother out of focus areas and slightly sharper and dun mind paying the extra.

buy 50mm f/1.2 cheaper than lasik~~ ;p

Forget abt both, get the f/1.2.

I've tried the 50mm f/1.2L USM, but the lens is kinda heavy for my EOS 400D, hence causing some kind of imbalance.

For the curious, I've finally settled down on the 50mm f/1.8 II.
Sorry for the disappointment to those who were hoping that i would get the 50mm f/1.4 USM.
If budget permits(i'm kinda strapped for cash right now), and since I'm rather inexperienced in photography, I've chosen the f/1.8 II as it is affordable and I believe I'm not that "high-level" yet. Getting the f/1.8 II first would allow me to experiment with the photos taken, and at the meantime understand the potential of a 50mm lens.

However, I've used the 50mm f/1.4 USM, and as the review says, it is indeed impressive. I would suggest that if you(who have a similar dilemma as me) wouldn't mind splurging, get the 50mm f/1.4 USM. The USM is truly silent, AF is quicker, and the bokeh created is much better.

I would leave this thread open for further discussion by other users. Comments are most welcomed, and I believe we all can learn from one another!

Cheers and have a merry christmas! :)
