It depends on how comfortable you are...there's no ideal ISO for all situation, it defers from situation to situation, low light, high speed action, etc.

i'm quite happy the 50D chooses the right ISO most of the time.. i do a lot of flashless, low light shooting during dinners in dimly lit restaurants. only wish the auto ISO would go up higher above 1600.. but on the other hand, not too happy with the noise/detail above ISO 2000.. guess its a double edged sword.

I'm on a 50D with the 17-55mm. Personally, I think it's probably the best non-L lens available from Canon. Haven't used a lot of L lenses, but it's certainly miles ahead of any kit lenses in terms of sharpness, image quality and speed.

No real complaints except for "wah lau, your lens so big" most of my friends say when I take my camera out and attach the hood. I have read anecdotal accounts on the internet of IS failing after a few months and dust getting inside the lens. I have no such problems (yet), though your mileage may vary.

To me, it's certainly worth the price. This lens was one of the factors that made me hesitate going full frame.

50D is a very good camera.. do it justice by putting the 17-55 onto it! its very sharp even at f/2.8..

Got mine from Cathay Marina in November last year. I'm using a B+W on it.

Just bear in mind you can't bring this along to the party if you decide to upgrade to FF in the future.

The focus shouldn't shift after you do a full press. Not sure what happens if you are on servo mode though. To be sure, why don't you switch it to manual mode after you have locked your focus?
