50D or 7D

Everybody can give you their 2 cents but the question is - will you get any richer? Read: Ultimately the best person who can decide which camera will suit you better is YOU. Since your opening post, you've yet to say what kind of photos you like to take. Might be useful to know since you are trying to get some advice.

Anyway, the 7D IS a different class of camera than the 50D. As far as Canon marketing goes, it's classed together with the 5D2 (just that it's a APS-C crop camera). I just finished shooting an event with the 7D and putting the new AF through it's paces and I must say, it's performance was pretty impressive. AF was fast and accurate and allowed me to "capture the moment" most of the time. High ISO performance and IQ were pretty good as far as I could tell from the LCD (have to wait for my editor's feedback). But as good as the 7D is, it still money wasted if you don't have use for the nice features that rgy1993 pointed out earlier. Do you feel it's time to upgrade your 400D because you want to take your photography to a new level or for other reasons? You already have your answer...

Upgrade to 50d in sept from my 1 month old 500d. so far happy with it...good grip, well balance with 18-200.

Bought my 50D last May... very happy with it. Friends who first time using my 50D also impress. I did try 7D during yesterday Canon PhotoMarathon.. Good feel too. Of course it is a better camera features compare to 50D, but 7D is different class (including the pricing factor). If I had not bought my 50D, i may have consider 7D.

But so far, i'm still very happy with my 50D. No point to upgrade to 7D. My personal opinion

I do agree with you but below are my Questions (Doubt)

1. "Capture the moment" is important but resulting in poor image due to focussing issue will really set me off . (i do experience it with 400D but could it be that it doesn't have spot metering ?)
2. Another example was F1 where limitations of the Fps speed and also the iso limit to take better photos for the night races here in singapore .
3. is 19AF in the 7d much much much better than 50D which only have 9AF

I'm more of a all rounder phographer which will take anything interesting pictures but will not spend too much on lenses and also on accessories.

So a better body ( so that i don't have to get a new upgrade in a short period of time )is my concern but is paying more really worth it or i'm just wasting my money ?? Please someone enlightened me .

I want something better than my 400D but i don't want to pay for a upgrade that is only minimal . Anyway , is 50D been around for amost a year ? so are we expecting something coming out soon ?

Been playing with the camera all day... And yes I am very impress with the AF feature. Its AF is simply way too fast! For just that, the price justifies! hah to me that is

Will try my best... but bear in mind, these are just my pov.. ymmv.

1. Spot metering is for evaluating the exposure and not so much for focusing. There is a "Spot AF" which is one of the AF modes on the 7D but I wasn't using that. I shot with One Shot focusing using Single point AF and evaluative metering. When I saw something I'd like to take, I swung the 7D from waist to eye level and fired away and still got the shot. That's how fast and accurately the 7D performed.

2. I was actually hoping the 7D would arrive in time for the F1 but alas it was only available after the F1 had come and gone. I have no doubt it would have performed brilliantly.

3. I have not shot extensively using the 50D before so I shall not comment out of respect for 50D owners However, I did test my friend's 50D when he first got it and it could very well be psychological, but I do feel that the 7D's AF is snappier and 19 points over 9 points is definitely an advantage. Maybe this question should be answered by 50D upgraders.

Your point about not spending too much on lenses but wanting a better body such as the 7D is perhaps a bit.. erm.. wrong, IMO. What lenses do you intend to use on the 7D? You do know that the 7D is 18MP and will probably outresolve most entry level/budget and possibly even some consumer class lenses, right? In any case, I wouldn't buy a 50D new at this point in it's life cycle. If you want something better than your 400D and think 7D is overkill, then my recommendation is either buy a 50D used or wait for it's successor. Else just get the 7D if it's within your budget. It's probably one of the best crop cameras at the moment and who knows, you might catch the BBB virus and end up getting good lenses for it too :angel:

Save the $$$ on better optics if you are currently using 50D. Better lens delivers more than the new features on the 7D.
Except the HDV.

No one mentioned about 6.3fps VS 8fps. A little bit of an edge if you're doing sports.

to answer some of your questions.

1) spot metering matters for the exposure of the image, but not really for focussing. the 7D definitely has a better AF engine compared to 400d. so you will benefit from the 7D here.

2) FPS does not actually matter much for sports like F1. All my good shots during F1 were taken using 1 shot mode, not the drive mode with X frames per second. It may matter for other sports, not my area of expertise, but if you are just a general all round photographer, very high fps may not be requirement.

3) 19 AF point, very nice to have as it spreads out the points, helping you in your composition and allowing you to select the closest af point to the subject.

If you get the 7D, make sure you get the lens to fit it, and by lens i mean the best ones out there. 10-22, 17-55is are 2 that comes to mind. But that said, the 15mp 50D also requires good lens for it to really shine.

managed to get a chance to try out the 7D at vivo showroom yesterday. camera feels alot heavier than 50D. some might like the sturdier feel. some might think it is too heavy. the af is a tad faster when acquiring but the bonus is the different af modes and customisation. the regular af points are alot bigger than the 50D. the spot af points are more of the regular 50D af point size.

the spring loaded cf card door is a nice feature. the power switch is a good implementation for alot of users. i thought the dof button was abit too small though. the whole camera feels quite good in the hand. overall it feels and works better than the 50D but at a 1k premium. image quality wise, one would probably need to invest in primes or good zooms because the sensor pixel density will outresolved alot of the consumer level lenses. u will get softness in your pics.

btw i didn't really like the sound. it sounds very different from the previous canon models. more like a cluck cluck sound now.

hi,henry,,,till today hobbyist are still using between 20d to 50d.so its not a matter of 60d coming out soon.a 30d can still project wonderful photos (provided with good lenses) and xxd series are still sought after by hobbyist.i've seen professionals with settings and knowledge while using 30d with results far better than those using 50d.does this mean 30d is better?my opinion, you can get a secong hand 50d and resell it anytime as the value of xxd series are better maintain than xxxd series. unless you are a professional, the 50d will do wonders for you to have fun with.

As for 50D the heat wasn't there in the first place compare to 7D...

So out of 10 ppl advice...
At least 8 ppl will advice you to go for 7D...
2 ppl will ask you how deep in your pocket.....

if your pocket is deep enough go for 7D..

Please remember there is still have other stuffs you need to invest too..
example; dry cabinet, lens, tripod with BH, cleaning kits, filter (UV Protector or CPL) and etc....the list will get longer and longer..... :bsmilie:
