Everybody can give you their 2 cents but the question is - will you get any richer? Read: Ultimately the best person who can decide which camera will suit you better is YOU. Since your opening post, you've yet to say what kind of photos you like to take. Might be useful to know since you are trying to get some advice.
Anyway, the 7D IS a different class of camera than the 50D. As far as Canon marketing goes, it's classed together with the 5D2 (just that it's a APS-C crop camera). I just finished shooting an event with the 7D and putting the new AF through it's paces and I must say, it's performance was pretty impressive. AF was fast and accurate and allowed me to "capture the moment" most of the time. High ISO performance and IQ were pretty good as far as I could tell from the LCD (have to wait for my editor's feedback). But as good as the 7D is, it still money wasted if you don't have use for the nice features that rgy1993 pointed out earlier. Do you feel it's time to upgrade your 400D because you want to take your photography to a new level or for other reasons? You already have your answer...
