50D features vs Older 40D worth the money to you?

50D new features over 40D, do you think it's worth it?

Hi Zexun,

I agree with David on the smokescreen part from Canon's crappy marketing plan to try to hoodwink customers: More likely its gonna make their loyal customers more frustrated. imo, tried both 40D and 50D and don't really see a difference in AF speeds nor ISO quality. I feel the major upgrade would be the more advanced Liveview, the megapixels and the DIGIC 4 processor, but then again, wif so much more mps, the digic 4 processor's low light performance would be negated, which may explain that I can't feel any difference btw them.

But one major disadvantage of the 50D is the slower FPS compared to the faster 40D, which makes the 40d seem more advanced. For low light, the 5D mkII is the one to get.

Awaiting this week's lottery...

bros... we are just kept being teased by Canon lar..

when 40D was released to replace 30D, there was also no very significant new features, and then people said wanted to wait for the next release (which would be 50D). Now Canon teased us again... give 50D with just.. a bit a bit improvement only.. so now some of us want to wait for 60D :bsmilie:

they release product, not to satisfy our need for a better gear in photography, but mainly to gain market/money.

during this festive period, what is the cost for 40d and 50d body. i am switching from 1000d and now i am still headache which model to go into although read from the whole of thie entire thread.

Not worth especially with worse noise control.

IMHO, for an upgrade to be worthy, the new body should be superior in most every way, especially with noise control, better LCD resolution + better/accurate focusing system.

The higher pixel count while good should not be the only thing to be considered for an upgrade.

40d s$1250, 50d s$1850+

last week i bought a brand new Canon 40D kit from Clubsnap :) cost $1250

I would vote for the 40D - it is gives more value for money and leave some cash to spare for a lens upgrade from the kit lens.

40d s$1250
This is a good price. May I know which shop sells it at this price?

I've got some friends who bought 40D from Cathay recently at close to $1400, inclusive of GST.

:Later,

There was one thread here that disappeared. In there, CSers pplneedthelord and USM posted-- S$1250 for 40D.

Any idea how many more years before 40D gets discontinued? Anyone knows whats the trend like? I plan to get one just before it discontinues, hopefully at the lowest price point then. =) Hope its like 2 years or something so got some time to save up.

Anyway, as for the main topic, the price is definitely not worth the upgrade.

40D has cross sensor for all the 9 focus point while 5D MKII only has it for the center sensor, according to Ronald Lim's experiment, 40D handles low light better than 5D MKII.

Your link does not work - try this instead, and your quote is flawed. His exact words are:

"In my experience the peripheral focus points of the 40D & 50D perform much better than the 5D Mark II peripheral AF points under low lighting."

In other words, if you need to AF in low light, use center AF point. And your 5D2 high ISO images will be less noisy than your 40D images (at the same ISO).

thanks for the link to this thread, headshotzx. got a 40D in the end, decided not worth shelling the $ 500 extra for the upgraded features. resigned to have the body depreciate in value within a few months' time. or maybe i should just convert it to IR later :p

Glad to help! Enjoy your 40D haha. I'm still on my 400D now-- saving for a 1D mark II ^^

TCW S$1250 for the 40D body. Grey set though. Shop warranty for 1 year.

50D has a lower DLA but has more detail than 40D.... difficult choice...

Yes, i do feel that the noise control at high ISOs is indeed a tad lacking on the 50D...

If you shoot 15mp and downsize to 10mp, then the noise is actually a bit better than the 40D. But we don't buy 50D's just to shoot at 10mp now, do we?
