The 50D have a function that is very useful for users like me with many third party or mount on using adapter lens.

AF Microadjustment
The 50D now offers the AF microadjustment feature seen on high end EOS models. You can adjust all lenses by the same amount or up to 20 lenses individually (+/- 20 steps in each case).

This function from the Digic4 is useful, but probably more useful on a FF (i.e. 5D MkII). If I am not wrong, this helps to alter things like vignetting etc; which may be more susceptible on a FF sensor.

I will get the 50D for its higher sensitivity!

Well, 50D body now is just 1.8K compared to 1.3K for most shop...so additional of 500 bucks for latest chip Digic IV and larger screen and larger pixel..i guess still ok

Interesting. Why is the 50D limited if an EF-S lens is used?
:bsmilie: or are you one of those guys who think that.. L lens rule all?

unseen beat me to it. I'm puzzled by faineant's remark as well. EF-S means only short back-focus, nothing to do with optical quality. Go try a EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS or EF-S 60mm f/2.8 macro. And try to find an L equivalent of an 10-22mm.

I'm interested to just share some information and not to create any conflict. My 'relay' of information about Camera Labs conclusion that a better lens would make the most out of the 50D is re-confirmed in Dpreview.com's review of the 50D as well.

In my opinion, IF I had a 40D I would not consider the 50D based on comparisons and reviews. However, if you ain't got a 40D then you could consider the 50D. Then again it all depends on several other factors.

Yup only use L to get the best out of your 50D :P
Maybe those who can wait ... prices of 50D may drop early next year .... and some users may even be 'dumping' their 50D soon to go for the 5D Mark 2 ....can grab it at a steal then. :bsmilie:

Thought you responded more than a week ago? :)

Yeah, pretty much my opinion too. But I'm waiting for the 5D2 before deciding. Besides, with world economy in such a sunny state, maybe some retailer will get desperate and offer a good discount.

considered 50D but went for 40D..and it seems a right decision for me.
reviews and forums complain 50D's high ISO noise issue here and there.
don't know how true:think:
as a 40D user, let me vote to "it's not worth" side:cool:

IF the price of the 50D goes free-falling, it's definitely a better buy than the 40D. Not because the 50D LCD is good, but because the 40D LCD is plain horrible. Also, AF microadjustment is fantastic. Something the DPReview team failed to test is the sRAW1 noise level. ISO 3200 suddenly becomes useful again.

Personally, I will wait for the 60D. :bsmilie:

after seeing comparisons of the raw files posted on dpreview, i think i will get the 40D for better IQ i guess...

Yes I responded a week ago about CameraLabs. My previous post is just to confirm CameraLabs review by dpreview.com which released the 50D review recently only.

By the way, I don't think camera retailers would get desperate. In fact if you're looking at a product like 5DMk2, a premium luxury product; seriously doubt the good discount hopes.

In the end is down to 2nd handed 40D vs new 50D or the much awaited 5D......;)Look like the price from 1x to 1.5x to 3x.....

World wide recession is looming.. especially next year..

So, wait and see next year, when consumer confidence is very low, manufacturers and shops have no choice to throw good bargains..

I'm a 450D user and am seriously considering the 50d as an upgrade. I have some decent L lenses on me at the moment. Do you think its worth it?

It is near impossible for us to say if the upgrade is worth it for you. What features of the 450D do you find limiting?

I am thinking in terms of the IQ & AF Servo.
I find the AF on the 450D is not that great. Besides this i shoot quite a bit of nature/birds so i would ideally like higher FPS.

Do you think the 50D can deliver in those areas? I'm not sure if you'll get better AF performance with the 50D (compared to the 40D) though the higher MP might come in useful.

Why not borrow or rent a 50D (if you haven't already) to see if it is a significant improvement from your 450D?

I'd get it for the better ergonomics and brighter viewfinder, but that's important to me, might not be as crucial to you.

Oh yea thats another problem i'm facing. I've got big hands, the 450d is really uncomfortable for me. I tested the AF servo seems a lot better than the 450d.

50D is like a curtain-raiser or "smoke screen" to distract potential buyers from other brands maybe? The period between the 40D and 50D release is so much shorter than the expected usual 18 months. Perhaps Nikon and even Sony are now clearly overtaking Canon in certain respect so Canon need to throw out the 50D to distract?

Maybe also its Canon's clever marketing ploy to satisfy buyers while everyone waits in anticipation for the 5D II. So to me 50D is just like an appetiser only. :) The real gems will be the 60D and of course, the more expensive than expected 5D II.
