To all Newbies

Kindly do not post ur name & equipment up to the thread. The list had already over 150 px haha

The purpose of the thread is to discuss the Pros and Cons of our model or asking question concerning equipment etc posting Name and Equipment do not serve any purpose at all.

Thanks.

Cheers

Hi dthh79

well for me, it definitely makes sense that 18-200mm is more expensive as it can give you the fleixibility of being a wide angle lens to a telephoto lens. It's a great lens to take on travels when you don't want the hassle of switching between lenses.

Dear 500d Users,

I'm planning to get 500d

Can any one tell me the diff between EF-S 18-200mm f3.5-5.6 IS & EF-S 55-250mm f4-5.6 IS, why EF-S 18-200mm price is higher den 55-250?

tks

Oneluckyguy, thanks a lot cos really not familar with Dslr, wanna upgrade to it to learn more :)

Hi all, I've had the 500d 17-55mm for a couple of months. This is the first DSLR set I've owned and I am still getting used to it.

One thing I have noticed is that my photos tend to be over-exposed and that I typically have to dial in up to -2/3 exposure compensation. Does anyone else have this issue?

currently using 18-55mm kit lens,
so can I use a 720nm IR filter to create IR photo with 500D?

Which metering did you normally use?

Hi, thanks for the question. I have mostly been using evaluative and spot metering. Also it didn't seem to matter whether shooting at f2.8 or f13, Av or Tv, etc.
Hmmm, I might put on an old kit lens on it and narrow down the cause- should have thought of this earlier. :)
I hadn't been too worried about it at first as a friend of mine mentioned that slight over-exposure is a common issue with digital sensors. But I wasn't expecting +2/3.
Other than this issue, I am extremely happy with the sharpness and bokeh of the 17-55mm and the handling of the 500d. Being able to shoot (not the official photographer) without flash at an indoor wedding last weekend was refreshing.

you're welcome :D

and welcome to the world of dslr. I started learning with a 400D, but that's a reeeeally old model now. 450D is still a favourite with many, but a new 450D is only like $100 difference from the latest 500D. You can also consider the 1000D if you're on a budget.

a great feature for beginners on the 500D is the new CA function. it allows you to get the bokeh effect without having to learn about aperture.

Im using the 500D as well and recently Ive noticed that my pictures are 'redder' than it should be. I usually use Auto white balance. Anyone else have the same experience?

post the pic with settings to see if it's weird?

Indoor, outdoor? What kind of lighting environment. Perhaps you can provide more info for us to understand more...

May I know where did u get this list from? we have about 181+ members in the original list if u scroll like 10 pages behind......
This list is outdated.....

haa, found the original list of 180 500D users at around page 40+, but there were some comments that the list was pointless, hence I didn't continue it here, but estimated, we should be around 200 strength now.

I don't find the list pointless though. I find it interesting to know what lenses (other than kit lenses) other 500D users are using. It's useful information for beginner users to at least get an idea of what type of equipment they should be looking out for if they want to upgrade out of their kit lens. of course, it's up to them to find out the whys.

Thanks for providing help on this. Here is a post of an outdoor night scenary shoot, and a indoor portrait shoot. Both without post processing.

Thanks very much for taking the time to advice :D

Peter: Haa, I think most of us using 500D are new users ba (considering 500D is an entry level DSLR) =)

I actually upgraded from 400D to 500D because of the liveview... ironically, I don't use the liveview AT ALL because the autofocus irritates the hell out of me, but I love that it has face detection. Great when I'm going fully auto.

karlyau: welcome to the club =) which lens did you get?
