I'm using the 18-200mm IS as a walk-about lens on my 500D. Great focal length range for just about any situation, and excellent IS performance giving extra 4 stops over non-IS lenses. The extra reach of the 200mm (320mm equivalent with crop factor) gives far more versatility than the 18-55 for those times when you need to zoom in or can't get close enough to the subject.

Image quality is generally good, but suffers from barrel distortion at the wide-angle end of the zoom.

Overall, it is a great all-rounder for those times (ie. when travelling overseas or out and about town) when you can't easily change lenses.

been a long time since i last log in..how r u guys!?! haha ;)

Try Quicktime to play, it works on mine.

Hi all 500D's bro,
Anyone bought 500D user guides? is it useful?

The product training is good? Anyone went share your experience?

EF 28-135mm, I seldom shoot wide angle so this is my workhorse (the 18-55 is my WA lens). Much prefer the USM on it (fast, silent and no spinning focus ring to watch out for) and stabilized as well (though not as good as the IS on the kit lens).

Hi everyone,

I am thinking of getting 500D with 18-200mm lens for the ease of travel. After reading up feedback 500D users, understand that the limitation of the 18-200mm lens has a slight disadvantage during wide angle shoots.

I would like to achieve the following:

1) able to capture a full shoots of towers from its base and landscape. (bad experience with the previous holiday)
2) Nice bokeh

Understand that the most important aspect behind great photos is the photographer itself, but i am looking for advise for the basic tools to achieve the effects which i have in mind. Main concern is to allow myself to future improve my learning capacity. Wish to achieve a certain level of skills and knowledge before committing deeply into this expensive hobby.

I was considering between a combination of the following:

1) 18-135mm + 18-200mm
2) 18-200 + 50mm f1.8

Kindly advise on the choices if possible.

Sorry what disadvantage are we talking about here?

Barrel-distortion? Seriously it wouldn't matter that much and hardly noticeable unless you need the pic to enter competition.... or unless you are pro.

Not sure what experience you had. Would you kindly share it?

Seriously I have been walking about with 50mm and I find it excellent lens even for some building or landscape shots.

Yes, maybe you need to stand back a bit to capture ALL of the landscape, but if you think about it, sometimes our photos just capture too much in the composition. Capturing part of the building sometimes strengthens the composition better.

Anyway the prime would give u the bokeh you want (not for long distance shots or landscape of cos!), so should satisfy point (2) of what you need. And its light-weight!

I have no idea why is (1) even in the consideration. You have overlapping ranges and 2 huge barrels of plastic which are dead weight to your back. If you like to switch lens and are really concerned with barrel distortion, do try
1) 18-55mm + 55-250mm (that same as what alot of people with 500D kit I start out with anyway).

If you don't want to switch lens, just use
2) 18-200mm ( or sigma 18-200+ or tamron 18-200+ range)

Throw in a prime (50mm 1.8 "cheapest lens around", or 35mm "food shots from your seat") and you should be ready for travel.

I dunno whats the hype with 18-135mm, given all the reviews done by it. Note that alot of people who swears on iit, might actually be sellers of the same lens on BnS. Check this out and read carefully about it:

I wun say much about it. Just read the link and form your own opinions.

id say get the 18-55 and a UWA like canon10-22 or tok11-16. for holidays you tend to use wider angles to take in the landscape.

The barrell distortion on the EF-S 18-200 IS is actually quite pronounced at the wide-angle end of the focal range from 18mm right up to around 30mm. For a casual user, it might not be a problem. But if BrownInu is your average SLR enthusiast, he/she will notice the barrell distortion when taking pics of buildings or any landscapes with horizon.

However, the included Canon software can correct this barrell distortion, and it is not really such a huge problem. When comparing kit lenses, one would choose the 18-200mm (kit 2) as it is a better lens overall versus the 18-55 IS (kit 1).

If BrownInu is very keen on landscape/architecture, then my suggestion is to get the 18-200 for general duties/travel, and add-on a specialist Wide-Angle lens like the EF-S 10-22.

Of the two choices you've mentioned, I would recommend the 2nd option.
The 18-200 for all your travel pics, and the 50mm for portraits and low light photography (including landscapes).

Later on when you are more keen to invest in your equipment, then recommend you get the EF-S 10-22, which is probably one of the best WA lenses on the market for a DSLR with an APS-C sensor (1.6 magnification in the case of the 500D).

I just bought my 500D today.DSLR newbie also.
I am wondering when I was using the build in flash,
what does the two bar(at the bottom of the viewfinder)mean?

Thanks for your sharing shannadaluc, i believe 18-200mm will be my choice for general duties/travel. Will be getting 50mm for family/Spouse potrait as well. Will try out 18-200 for wide angle shoot before proceeding on to 10-22mm. Check are you aware of the price for 10-22mm in SGD?

I am able to notice the barrel distortion of 18-200mm but believe photo shop will be good enough.

Check if you are able to recommend webpage or books to improve my skills. I am more of a reading first then follow by practical type.

I had problems capturing tower and landscapeduring my holiday trips(eg: standing below tokyo tower but unable to capture the whole image, mountain shoot and so on during family holiday.

Understand your reason, i am still trying hard to understand the essence of composition. Will be glad if you are able to share some knowledges and skills :)
