500D Users Thread

just wondering, i'm intending to get a walk-about lens but i'm not sure which lens to choose from.

i've narrowed to 3 lens but not sure if which is the better choice:

1. EF 24-105mm f4L IS USM
2. EF 24-70mm f2.8L USM
3. EF 28-135mm f3.5-5.6 IS USM

just to take note, the 1st and 2nd lens are L lens.
i'm a newbie, just gotten my 500D late last month

A photographer friend of mine, told me if you're looking for a long term lens usage > 24-105mm would be a better choice to have.

Bear in mind that the 500D has a 1.6x crop factor so with all 3 lenses you lose the wide angle end (1 & 2 start at 38mm, 3 at 45mm). All 3 are meant for full frame DSLRs so get them if you're planning to upgrade your camera body in future. I myself own the 28-135 but I seldom shoot wide angle so I use my 18-55mm kit lens for that.
In your case, the EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS is ideal. The wide zoom range will save you from changing and carrying multiple lenses so you can just concentrate on shooting. It's also a lot cheaper than the 24-105mm/24-70mm.

Hmm..probably I should get a 50mm f/1.4 lens for a start first...hee..waiting for year-end to come..hopefully, MS Color has promo by then. I called them up 2 days ago, the price went up for 500D after their Aug's promo. :cry:

Any wide range zooms will have optical compromises (jack of all trades, master of none). From the reviews the 18-200 has reasonable IQ but pronounced barrel distortion at 18mm. Just don't expect L quality from it and you'll be fine, this lens is all about convenience.
Another possible choice (if you're not after long zoom range) is the EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM-similar range to the kit lens but a huge f/2.8 constant aperture and excellent IQ. I would've gotten it but the price was a stopper and I needed more range.
The 18-135mm is very new so I can't comment on it. Personally I'm more interested in the EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM (released together with the 18-135). If the reviews are good, I might get it to replace my 28-135mm (I have the EF-S 55-250 for telephoto use).

I had the 18-200kit lens too. How do you find it? I find that the zoom from 135mm onwards is not effective at all... at least to my eyes.
