Hey I'll definitely take you up on your offer;) I've got a 60mm macro, nowhere as sophisticated as yours hehe but I'm good to go! In the meantime I'll go practise a bit...

Best is pratice on non moving small items first. once you got yr handheld technique right you will be able to ge the moving insects/bugs. Meanwhile be kind to them and make friends with them...hee. Steve may want to conduct a course on making friends with insects.

   Steve.....

wah!! so close up untill can tell the sex of the fly!!!:bsmilie:

You can’t tell the sex :dunno: any fly expert care to help, but this one is a she, that’s why I used that word her twice, actually a male is trying to mate with her and end of it he did mate with her, that’s why she keep coming back to the same spot. I got five to six shots of the pair mating on the same lalang, I’m still looking for the pictures, I’ve move the files into another hard disk and that hard disk crash, lost quarter of all my work, hopefully can find it in my only remaining hard disk, my files too many, very messy all over the place.

People laugh when they see my setup, make up of masking tape and recycled plastic, while others pull out their big Macro lens, my is the most cheappo one not sophisticated one k. Ya. Practice make perfect, let me know when you are ready. ;)

I agree with you Deswitch.

Bigu2fan do remember 'knowing your equipment first’ how fast you can think and change your speed, aperture, focusing, zoom and flash, at the minimum focus distance, you can practice at home when you are free, even today I sometime practice shooting my legs hair from half to one hour at home, so that I can be quick to move into my 4” kill zone pin point, one shot one kill(Sniper moto)that’s for focusing only, so the moment will not be wasted, because you are shooting an elusive subject.

OK Deswitch and broccoli I can conduct a course on making friends with insects, so must prepare to learn new language ok! starting with new 30 numbers and 78 alphabets. Hahaha….. ;)

Great magnification and details Steve. And you certainly are very innovative and creative. :)

Steve, they are gorgeous. Can you share your setup in more detail. I know nuts abt macro.

I noticed many people using Panasonic FZ series for Macro with great effects.

Thanks Digitalbuff.

The leica filters thread is 44mm I have to modify to 55mm thread so that I can screw onto my FZ, used two ring one for the front one for the rear and the filters place in between the ring, tape it up with masking tape, done! The rear of the filters will then screw onto the front of my camera lens.
As for Macro know how just google, there are lots of site that you can learn from.

Other brands can perform as well, maybe just coincident that Panasonic FZ user loved Macro more than others. :)

Nice close ups steve! Still amaze at your drive to test out new set ups!

Hi y'all,

Need to ask you a question. Ok, I'm working on my focusing zoom, aperture and stuff on still objects at the moment. But what do I do for flash? :dunno: I cannot 'angle' the flash at the object since 4" is too narrow. I don't bounce the light up at 45 degree also right? So I need a bounce card or candyfloss card?:) Knowing Steve he probably doesn't use a ring flash?

I have a Canon 430Ex.

Steve have a difuser mounted on the front of his lens.. I use off shoe cord to fire the flash from the side.

Setting a standard for many to follow. Damn good

Hi Stevewhy, Wow.....i had nothing to say....u beat me from top to bottom...ur pic is excellent.....i cannot close my eyes after saw ur pic.

afew question, what is the leica lens u used for the macro? what is the magnifiaction or how many diopter? u hv such an enough DOF for ur fly pic.. my DCR250 only give less DOF enent i used F11

what meteral u used for ur home made difuser? i suffer with a harsh flash so i plannig to do a home made difuser like ur's...but dunno what meterial to used.

Thanks Cherjier.

No! not trying to beat anyone, trying to encourage more into Macro and do better than me. :)

I’m using Leica VIa and VIb screw on close up filters, according to Raynox DCR250 diopter +8 my is +7.5 and the Raynox DCR250 magnification is about 6.4X so my should be around 6X.
For the diffuser I used recycled plastic milk container, hope this help. ;)

Inspirational stuff Steve! I just came back shooting some spiders at the void deck (with a few aunties giving me weird looks) but found that the flash is too harsh on the subjects....especially bad with the shadows. Your DIY diffuser is definitely worth a try....looks like i have to start drinking milk from White Plastic bottles from now on ;p

BTW, found this blog that teaches people how to make DIY Diffusers for SLRs...looks like he's using the same material as you + some paper to spread the light evenly...worth a look for all budding Macroers out there...

Thanks Xeon11.

Yes people always stop and look when you are out of place taking pictures. Ya shadow is the last thing in macro photography that you want do away with, hope you find the right solution. :)

Thanks for the link, different material will give you different colour tone, even it looks white. ;)
