Thanks Everyone for the earlier posting and reply.

i do realized that 17-85mm had distortion problems from reviews.
But which lens is better for travelling ? 18-55mm IS or 17-85mm IS USM.
As i do not want to get 2 travelling lens. i'll buy together with 450D

By the way, anyone care to explain what is the purpose of USM (Ultrasonic motor) ?

Also, thinking about getting the Sony A350.
Which one to buy ? Canon 450D or Sony A350 ?

went to the canon showroom at vivocity today and played with it for about 10 minutes. I must say that the grip feels sooooooo much better as compared to 300D - 400D. not as good as its older siblings but at least my pinky have a place to rest. one more thing, i don't know if it's only me but i find the ISO button out of place. i have to move my shutter finger to press the button and twist my palm up so my middle finger can turn the dial. i find it really inconvenient to change the ISO that way. or maybe i'm doing it wrongly :dunno:

but other than that, in my 10 minutes assessment of the 450D, i give it a:thumbsup:

Any pple who owns a Crumpler bag (1 or 2 Million Dollar home)? Do you know if it can fits a EOS 450D with only 1 lens?

Any websites out there that has a FULL review on the 450D?

But which lens is better for travelling ? 18-55mm IS or 17-85mm IS USM.

The 18-55 IS is MUCH sharper than the 17-85 IS.

The difference between 55 and 85 mm is NOT big. At the ultrawide end, every 1 mm is significant, but NOT at the normal to slight telephoto range.

By the way, anyone care to explain what is the purpose of USM (Ultrasonic motor)?

Ring USM is quiet and VERY fast. But I don't think it's worth forking out so much more dough for the 17-85 lens instead of the 18-55, especially since the latter is so much sharper. And both offer IS.

Also, thinking about getting the Sony A350. Which one to buy ? Canon 450D or Sony A350 ?

The difference in the image quality between the Sony A350 and Canon 450D is HUGE. If you don't believe, you can go to the Sony and Canon showrooms, take shots at ISO 1600 and compare. The Sony A350 images are like compact digicams.

I don't understand why Sony has gone backwards to implement a 14 MP CCD when they've got a decent 12 MP CMOS sensor. :dunno: The latter is only slightly inferior to Canon's equivalent but their CCDs have always been pretty terrible.

i really like the canon 450d buttons layout and its light weight.
But personally i find the sony a350 pictures more vibrant.
i like to buy a nikon d80 successor but it is not even announced yet.
i'm not considering d80 because it is an old model.
Maybe i should wait a little longer till all 3 model is available then buy.
By then , we can compare Canon 450D, Sony A350 and Nikon D90(D80 successor)

Any good zoom lens compatible for Canon 450D that is 18-200mm or 18-250mm or 18-300mm range ?

Is the Canon 18-55mm f2.8 IS USM better than the Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 lens ?

Also, i think Canon has better service centre located at vivo city than other brand camera. So i think i will have a peace of mind looking for repair if needed.
Sony and nikon doesn't have a service centre located in a convenient place.

eh, for me personnally,

i went to the sony showroom and tried the A200 and A700 (A350 not available for show), quailty was quite bad. the fitted lens were 50 f1.8. and the A200 VF is bloody small and dark i can hardly see properly. (cant even see the lights showing the esposure settings)

its definitely a nikon/canon for me, chose canon because it has a wider "fan base" (most of my frens on canon), so i can borrow equip from them.

if you dont like the weight of 450D, "D90" will be around that light weight too i think.
and as they say, "The more you wait, the less photos you take"

a recommended lens will be the sigma 18-200mm

canon's 17-55 f2.8 IS USM is definitely better than the tamron 17-50 f2.8
but canon's price is more than 2x of tamron's. although, IMO, the IQ upgrade isn't worth the extrea 700-800$, its still plausible to get the canon 17-55, coz its at the top of the upgrade chain. if you have that, its very unlikely that you will change to another lens (unless WA or tele)
