420ex or sigma 500 DG Super

For the G5 (i have a G2) even the 420EX is felt quite top heavy. I would consider the 220EX which is much smaller (cheaper) although lacking on some features. I would not even want to put my 550EX on the G2.
Although only tested it once, it'll be a good choice too IMHO if you don't need E-TTL.
You can also check out Metz 44AF-4C which I initially was looking for but either out of stock or don't sell.

BTW, I am very happy with Sigma 500 DG Super especially the translucent cover that can be slipped out easily (and slide back if not in use) to use for macro at up to 17mm.

The Sigma 500DG can be nearly as good as canon 500EX.
So if u want to save money, take the Sigma 500DG.

i have both 550ex and 500DG. I use 500DG during event shooting to 'preserve' my 550ex for more important things like birds 
500DG has a slower recharge time compared to a standard 550EX. 550EX with CP-E2/3 is even faster. I think someone switched from Canon to Nikon because 550EX recharge time with CP-E2 not fast enough for him ;p so you can imagine how slow the 500DG is.
The big plus is that 500DG has optical slave which 550EX doesn't have. By the way, optical slaves are fully compatible with E-TTL/E-TTL2 (550EX preflash doesn't trigger the 500DG in optical slave mode).
minus is probably the build quality, don't know if it'll survive being dropped. I've dropped the 550EX a couple of times already and its still going strong

I used a 300D, bought a 420EX. Found flash power insufficient. Sold off the 420EX after 1 week. Bought a used Sigma 500DG Super. Have been super happy with it.
If you are using a G2 to G5 take a look at the Sunpak PZ40X. You will find just about a good size for it. It has a power zoom, manual power control and uses two AA size batteries. I used it on the Coolpix 5700 and am very happy with it.

Go for the 420 ex ,better altough it cannot adjust the flash to manual.
I had return the sigma flash back just to exchange for a 18-125mm len
reson is because i had tried more than 10 pcs of 500dg super eo-ettl .The flash recycling time is good but..............
while u zoom in and out and take quick snap,the flash will mulfunction.No flash will emit!!!
Sigma had just confirm with me that the flash does not support the zomm in and out and focus and shutter at the same time,the canon flash allows.so better buy the canon one.
