40D or D90

Fine. If you Canon fans really like your built-in flash as AF assist than a dedicated AF assist LED, so be it. I'll let it rest. This is the Canon forum after all.

Hey, you just got your camera, so play nice when you're around more experienced photographers. Do you see us Canon users discussing much about it? No. What does that mean? The AF assist doesn't matter.

I like to keep telling people this:

If your burst rate not good enough, time your shots.
If your buffer overruns too quickly, time your bursts.
If your shutter lags too long, compensate by clicking earlier.
If your AF doesn't work well, manual focus.

I read somewhere on the net (review / comparison) that the 40D's autofocus is way better than Nikon D80, and the 50D's better than the D90. So since the 50D has the same AF module as 40D, the 40D's AF is better than the D90. Better in the sense that it locks on faster by contrast (or lack of) detection without aid.

Shoot something 10m away in low-light with either camera. Chances are that the 40D will be able to lock on with AF and the D90 can't. That's because, like I said, the AF assist lamp doesn't work at that range.

@ iamshiwei, do tell us your initial impressions when you do get the camera. Oh, and also the price ;)

Cheers,
Zexun

We never said we were uberstrongfanboys of it. The only fanboy around seems to be you.

The Canon in-built AF assist may be more irritating, but the Nikon's doesn't have a further reach, nor is it superior in much of a way. If you are going to be shooting in very dark environments, a Speedlite's AF assist is still favoured.

And you can always tell your Speedlite not to fire, but to perform AF assist only, which means you don't always have to shoot with flash, so if you're still around, here's me telling you explicitly.

I use a 40D. My initial impression upon trying a D90 is that the focusing is slower. Both with kit lens.

just go to the shops to try and read up reviews. you ask in canon forum, pple will tell you to buy canon, you ask in nikon forum, pple will tell you to buy nikon, you ask in oly forum, pple will tell you buy neither. each got their own strengths and weaknesses, see which one you can live with.
