Agree yet disagree with cheap lens, they serve you well indeed but what are you trying to prove? :dunno:

Sorry, can't resist replying to this hehe: Exactly... (but he said he's only talking to one person when he said everybody)

Better glass ...............by how much $?:)

Zenten, for example, in this thread I mentioned the 28-135mm lens. This is a basic, but good quality lens for all intensive purposes which I'm using on my 400D. You can get it firsthand at about S$690.

The lens which I am probably going to have to consider buying for the 5D is either the 24-70 2.8L or the 24-105L which are approximately S$1700, and S$1500 respectively (at their cheapest - either from Hong Kong or second hand)

So the price diff is pretty big between standard and L quality glass! So i guess, is the price worth it?? :P SIgh, questions I keep asking myself.

I think L's are quite worth it second hand depending on condition :) Normaly the resale value of L's drop much slwoer if its second hand heh..

Your hesitation here could only mean one thing ........... with Ls you are not assured of quality even though you are paying so much more. ;)

raptor: yeah, noticed that. but most lenses are like that anyway right? only about 20% drop for second hand, not much. saw some lenses relaly cheap on ebay though, but in US... so worth the risk? :P

Zenten: er. not at all. actually you have it the wrong way round. It's a question of paying so much more, for that quality. that is the question. It's a question of 'affordability', i.e. paying half a month's salary for a lens versus my personal use.

For example if i was to buy a car, i would obviously weigh the cost of the car right, even though i know that i would love to have one........

Actually third party lenses drop the most form new to second hand. Original manufaturees lenses do drop less but Ls seem to hold value most all in terms of % of new price.

That more expensive does not equate to better image quality.

TS has some excellent (not necessarily very pricey) lenses, that optically perform very well. There is no real need to go for the all out best and most expensive, unless some property (such as a large aperture, for instance) of that particular lens is absolutely critical to getting your shots. Agree?

Thanks for the reference! I have better understanding now and I appreciate the help you've given me. Thanks again! :-)
