wah now got new variable in the equation ... 28-75 ... hmm ... from the price list the price vs 17-50 tamron isn't that much different. do you think this is a sharper lens than 17-55? of course it would be nice to have wider angle for my case ... heh heh ... =)

zac, thanks for the add on analysis. would you pay an extra $200 for an extra f stop? (for the 35mm) and keeping in mind that astin thinks that it is very close to 50mm anyway ...

yo aaron, thanks for your note on 17-50. tempting tempting ... hmm ...

ortega ... maybe my next project is to capture them in their act of running away hands in the air and screaming ... but does that mean i need an even faster lens??? ha ha ha ... =P

For an extra stop? yes. I would... it would mean a good shot in poorer conditions rather than a possible bad shot. For example, if I am shooting at 1/15 for f2.8, I would be able to get away with 1/30 at f2. ;)

As for the 28-75, I am using this lens and if you dun need the wider part, then you may wanna consider this one as well. Good lens and fast focus. As for sharper or not, it's how you use the lens and at the different conditions. Not all lenses work the same way. ;)

Cheers,

zac, so does that mean that given a choice between 28 f2.8 and 35 f2, you would choose the 35mm?? would you say that the 28mm and 35mm is close enough in reality?

Well... considering that I have a 28-75 f2.8.. I'd rather plonk my money on a 35mm f2 :bsmilie:
That is also considering that I would really like a 50mm perspective (on DSLR's 1.5 crop factor)

I also have a 24 and 50 already, so I know their limitations in terms of indoors and outdoors usage. Would love to have wider in tight conditions, but well, that's still for later for me... I still prefer to take tighter closeup shots. This is a personal choice, so dun hold me to it as a guideline. ;)

sure zac, i know what you mean. so even though you have the 50mm (like me) you'd still consider the 35mm? =)

yeah... coz it's a different focal length when it's on a DSLR. It appears to be approx 50mil.

Rather than the 50mil which appears to be 75mil (though it's a favoured piece for shooting ppl and animals closeup) ... ;)

I am also looking a prime in that range. I think 28mm f2.8 no point lor... The Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 is VERY sharp and good at 28mm f2.8 + you have the flexibility to go 75mm....

I am considering either the nikkor 35mm f/2 or the sigma 30mm f1.4. Most probably the sigma.

hey wind30, care to share why the sigma 30 f1.4? =) i suppose you don't already have the 50mm f1.8?

I have seen quite a few sample shots of the 30mm sigma. It is much sharper at the center at f1.4 than I would expect for a $700 lens. The only problem I am afriad is I heard that the corners remain soft even when stopped down to f8.

I will probably test it first b4 I buy.

28mm f2.8 and 30mm f1.4 is 2 stops difference. Besides if you mainly use it wide open, the corner softness should not be an issue.

My case different from yours. I take travel pictures with a VERY WILLING subject, my wife. I got a 12-24 tokina and 85mm f1.4. Now a 30mm f1.4 for indoor low light shots should be good for me. I am thinking about either the 30mm f1.4 or the nikkor 35mm f2.

Seriously, if you are thinking about the 28mm f2.8, might as well get the tamron 28-75mm f2.8.

thanks wind30 .. will consider the 28-75 but i would prefer the wide angle end too ... that's why i thought of the 17-55. but can't afford leh .... that's why looking for alternatives now ...

Go ask the shops to test the Tamron 28-75 as well as 17-50 lor... then at least you're only busting about 600 bucks or so....

But always remember, primes will deliver much better picture quality. ;)

thanks zac, which shop would you recommend for the tamron?

All lenses these days are coated. But at which extent it helps in better photos? I'll leave that to the technical experts. I'm the sort who goes for the lens because it can assist me to get a decent picture. ;)

Coating improves contrast.

So any difference in pic quality between Tamron and Nikkor? Any feedback from someone who have extensive use of this 2 brands would be great!

Would be getting the lens soon when I get my pay check... :D
