35mm Choice: Summilux pre-asph or Summicron Asph? or..?

using the 28mm cron asph. the hood is huge but the lens is great.

to be honest , it depends on the style of shooting . i would prefer a 15mm or a 21mm f2 or even with a aperture of f1.4 but i think the price and size will be like the slr magic or a noctilux.

personally i dont like the glow too but the size and compactness of the pre asph is perfect with any m body or other bodies such as konica or cv bessa.

as for the v1 cron, it is a very compact and small lens with low contrast , high resolution from f2.8 onwards but soft when at f2.

and do note that these older lens do flare quite easily .

to be honest , the most amazing lens i think is my camera from iphone. At f2.8 , it does not shows much bokeh and its dam sharp. focus almost instant and upload or share pics in sec.

but wasted no red dot

imho.

HCB 2012 would use iPhone 4S to take street photo.

Capa 2012 would use GRD IV. (actually, historically I dun think Capa ever used a Leica.)

Magnum 2012 seriously I dunno how many of them are really still using Leica, or just saying so coz of the marketing collab between Magnum and Leica.

war photography nowadays is 99% DSLR

there is something about Leica-Magnum marketing that is very very clever to make people think another way

how come these days everyone is into real sharpness & bokeh but not many into real pictures?

Every thread these days seems to be about how sharp the lens can be, how re-fine the bokeh can be etc................

in the meantime, we're slowly being poisoned by the japan boyz...

You are right, Gary.

Here is something to chew on -- talks about how almost all 50mm lens are good enough, especially if you are shooting film. sm-02-09-22.

The funniest quote is from Dante Stella - "...The new Leica seems to make its money injecting metaphysical doubts into the heads of the weak-minded."

And here is Dante Stella on the pitfalls of casual lens testing -- Dante Stella

many thanks for the Dante Stella article. It is very informative indeed.

too late guys... i have already succumbed to the crave for the cron.. Asph!

just tested a shot and am very pleased with the result.. bokeh at 0.7m up close surprised me actually. sorry i'm still young and naive and easily drugged.. for the inexperienced like me, bokeh and sharpness gives me a little more room for creativity and to think about composing my shots.

will put up some comparison shots with the CV 35mm 1.4 when i have time..

I'd go with a classic rendition anytime! Or perhaps, the often under-rated Summaron... don't you ever wonder why Leica no longer make lenses like that?

I was talking with some Leica employees, present and ex and the common consensus is that when Leica replaces or stops making a lens, it does not always mean that they have replaced it with something better. It normally means that they have run out of materials or all the people making the lens have retired. The new lens is also not always an improvement, it is often just different.

This is one of the reasons that Leica lenses appreciate so much in value when discontinued. People still want and look for lenses made decades ago.

Thats not very true bro. The asph lens is very good, I used alot of old lens and non of them perform well like the new asph. The corner are all high resolution and not blur blur one . Less vignet and LESS FLARE , on digital may seems too sharp but on film its actually ok.

But I agreed on the summaron , very well made and very compact.

In terms of the build of the barrel , aperture blade and compactness . All solid made and not like the new asph ones.

Well I guess that's the exact point of it all. There's a lot of differences between lenses just as people's taste for these differences are well different! So there's a need to understand that not only the new ones push the edges of technology but the old ones help in even better stealth and so on, at least by design. There's plenty of different ways to compare. But one thing is for sure. No two lenses are ever the same. And they all are created on their own basis of whatever they want to push that specific lens for.

I succumbed liao. Because of Jon (and thanks to his help), I have the Millennium Nikkor which is highly regarded as a Japanese Summilux. :bsmilie: I'm tempted to acquire a 85/2 and 50/1.4 Nikkor. ;p

Just for the fun of it, anyone can correctly guess all the lenses (including type & version), kopi will be on me!

Oh yes bro, i adore compact lenses.... the bigger they are, the higher chance they stay (only) in the drycab!
