$300 to $600 underwater compact camera?

Specs wise, I thought the Canon D10 was quite good, but the bulbous lens was a bit awkward. My daughter took a look and said no, no. She looked at the various camera models and decided that the Sony TX5 was best looking.

Anyone knows whether the TX5 is now in the shops and the best price. Sony Singapore website puts the list price at $599.

Bought the TX5 from Parkway Parade today. $599 list price, no discount. But they are having a Road Show, apparently last day today. Free gifts.

Camera comes with case and 1 8GB MS card. But I got the following extras:

Additional Sony battery (Sony Singapore website quote $79)
Harrods hamper containing shortbread, chocolates and some dried fruits (claimed worth $100 but I think more like $30 to $50)
Screen protector
Mini Tripod
Cleaning kit

I checked Alan Photo & Best Denki - no stock. Harvey Norman - willing to sell at $570 but no freebies. Preferred to wait a while longer but daughter wants it for tomorrow's swimming meet. So, no choice but to buy now.

Hope TS don't mind me riding on this thread, am looking for a compact uw cam, read abt the Panasonic FT2/TS2, played with it today and quite fond of it, but out of my budget. Does anybody know which shops still have the previous model, FT1 and at what price?

KNV, how much is the price of TS2? I saw it is $569 with 8GB with case... going to buy either the blue or the orange one!..

My colleague showed me a website with owners complaining that the warranty for such cameras doesn't include demage caused by water.

Is it true? Can owners please verify with your warranty cards.

Haven't had time to research in other shops, only saw it in Courts at 649 iirc.... orange one looks good!
Know of shops still selling the previous model?

as far as Olympus 8000 goes...not true. mine slightly flooded but they changed the component inside, they acknowledged that it was water-damaged.

Any updates on a good PnS underwater camera? Please comment

My daughter has been using it in the swimming pool. So far so good. My colleague, who also bought it, loves it. Picture quality wise, I still prefer Canon. But it is the user that counts. The girls just love the camera. It's size, style and colour. Picture quality is secondary to them. But they also think picture quality is very good.

I think the new SOny sliding one (forgot model, u can google) is pretty good as it shares the same CMOS as the TX5/HX5 ... as AVCHD video too... better codec to save space on good quality HD video (many website say not good as hard to edit but its pretty std of a video format now)

else chk out Panny's TX7 also... or the Pentax one (again forgot model)

The only underwater compact from Sony I believe is the TX5. Not aware of any other model from Sony.

For Panasonic, the only model is the DMC-FT2 (TS2).

Have not checked my warranty card yet. For normal cameras (in fact, almost all electronic goods), damage by water is excluded from warranty. But it seems to me that if this is supposed to be a water-proof camera, then such damage should be included.

But they normally will have exclusions. From Sony website, "Damage caused from misuse, abuse or failure to properly maintain the camera is not covered by the limited warranty". So, I guess they can always claim that it must be due to misuse or failure to maintain the camera properly, that caused the damage.

ah thks... sorry i got all the model number wrong .. haha..

personally i like the TS2 but the TX5 seems worth a shot too.. i just love AVCHD movie files.. so can be siding that.. if want PQ then one shld really look at sample shots..

I hv the old Pentax WP60 .. its nothing great compared to what we hv now but for some reason, the sucky photos came out rather like a "Retro camera" style... hahaha
