2nd hand Canon EOS 450D at $700. Should I buy?

to TS:

if you need to ask this question, means you have not done the research of the market rate vs the BNS rate. if you did, you will know if its a good deal. if its 20percent off for a camera thats over 18 months old, i will not hesitate to get a NEW piece.

you already mentioned this is YOUR MONEY. why are you asking us hw to spend it? what if all of us tries to punk you, and get you to buy the camera when its totally not worth it? are you going to listen to us?

and come on. nothing to do with being poor or what. if you need to scrimp and save and think soo hard if to get the camera, den dun get it. This is a hobby, and it should be an enjoyable, happy thing that you get easily without thinking too hard. if you are going to be broke after you get it, better not get it. unless you are a person that will look at the camera all day long and be happy with zero dollar in your pocket.

you are a big boy, learn to make tough decisions yourself. nobody should be deciding such things for you.

if u are worried, then just buy a brand new one. saves your headache.

the cons of buying second hand is that how the previous owner maintains his camera. :)

Read through old threads.... found that TS said he WILL NOT buy a 450d as it has no video functions....

TS, dont keep changing mind la... too many options makes decisions very hard and miserable .... ;)

Absolutely. And all that comes with experience. And experience comes with having a DSLR, which I never had.

i had 0 exp when i first bought my d80 2nd handed. it was from a guy that bought from usa. 6mths old with no local warrenty.

i can still remmber him selling @ 850.with kit lens.

i remember hunting cs forums for weeks. and most d80 are sold at 850 just body alone!. it didnt take long for me(just 1min after his post)...i straight away call him and ask for reserve and meet up on that day. 1 hour later. im a happy owner of d80.

btw, 6 months after using it, i sold the set at about 820-830 cant recall. =) and upgraded to d90. thats $20 rental for 6months and i took about 10k worth of shots.

morale of the story : when you see good deal...dont think so much and so long...jump in. its the same for stock market...buy low...sell high...of course dont work in camera- they depreciate. But i did sold my d80 before d90 release...haha

A pentax k-x with lens cost $7xx, brand new.

The 2nd hand 450D body cost $700? Lol if u buy lens it'll cost more than the k-x already

Congrats for paying more for a 2nd hand camera which cost more than a brand new k-x. The k-x is much superior than the 450D btw. They're a totally different class.

Theres a sony a350 package with lens, selling for only $550 in BnS. And a350 is better than 450D as well.

Well, at least u r making the seller happy.

TS has expressed only interested in Canon & no other brand. Don't think he care even if K-X or Sony is cheaper & far better. But then he may change his mind as he said he will not get 450D cos no video function and now...

TS,

If you have to be worried about the price of the 2nd hand item and keep worrying about whether you may kenna "chop carrot head"by the seller, perhaps you are not a person to buy a 2nd hand item. Cheap as it may be but you will keep worrying if the product is defective in some way or if you could have gotten it cheaper...

I suggest you look at something of other brands, new which cost less than the 2nd hand 450d. For $700 with body only, you will minimum need another $100 or so for any lens to play with , and it may well stretch the budget too much ... and you stop worrying about hidden agenda of the 2nd hand seller

The other way is, why even a dSLR? If budget if tight, buy a nice P&S, like LX3, s90, FXR200, FZ35 etc, learn about the various settings/composition/post-processing etc ... it will last you a few years , perhaps then you may find buying a dSLR more affordable :)

Having said that I paid $1200 for my 450d new and love it , but that is for me only ;)

I know you will have fun shooting whatever you get !! Cheers !! ;)

I've already decided to get a Canon only and nopes, I'm getting a DSLR only. I know I'll need a minimum of another $100 or so for a decent lensto start shooting. I prefer a 2nd hand Canon to a new Pentax. And yeah, I'm a bit scared lest the item is defective. I don't know if I'm a 2nd hand person or not. It's the 1st time I'm buying anything 2nd hand apart from text books, I think it's quite normal behaviour on my part when I have such a tight budget to work with..

Oh man, I got it. Read all your replies. I'm going to make the decision myself, k? Someone rightly pointed out that everyone here could be playing me and make me buy the 2nd hand one. Well, I've alr decided to get a Canon as I said above. I din want to get a 450D initially, but now I am settling for one cos I thought over it and realised I don't really need the video feature.

Thanks for all your input. Some made me laugh at myself.. haha

I won't post such a thread again.

I just want to know my fellow ClubSnappers' opinions before buying what. It's my money which is ultimately being spent and I have every right to ensure that it is spent in the best way possible. If you have too much money to spare, then very good for you. Not everyone is as rich as you!

you've already stated that "it's your money"... so to say, it's your decision... what does CSers got to do with "your money"? it's yours, it's you who knows what you need... i supposed you are old enough to decide for yourself... and yeah, not evreyone is rich, so, are you? do you really need a DSLR?

TS

If you're so concern about the equipments condition and not get con by the seller..
Then I really really suggest to you to think other brand, not just Canon.. Especially since this is your first dSLR so you haven't own any lens.

Someone suggested Pentax k-x WITH lens for around the same price you'll be paying ONLY for the Canon body. It's new somemore.. It should address both your concern right??

Good luck with your purchase

TS - A final word of advice, please don't buy if you are tight on finances. Bear in mind that this is an expensive hobby, there are many who end up regreting and selling thereafter. In short, Cash is King, be wise in your spending, don't buy on impulse. :)

Btw besides $700 for body, u need to factor in cost of lens. And it doesnt end here.

U will need to buy dry cabinet (else fungus can grow in ur lens), lens and camera cleaning kits and blower, lens filter as well as camera bag and tripod. All these will add another $200-300 in addition to ur camera body and lens.

And do pray that the body u buy has no dust in sensor. U wont be able to find out whether there is dust in sensor until u got home and view pictures through ur computer monitor.

Sensor dust can sometimes be very hard to clean, u might need to buy sensor swap if the dust is stubborn. Thats quite expensive.

TS,
you could decide what you really need ???
If $$ is tight, then get a canon P&S like the S90. Its new. (though a bit ex), sure have warranty. Takes great pictures. Has manual / program / aperture / tele modes for you to learn the basics. Nice range zoom (slightly more than a cheap dSLR 18-55 kit lens), lighter, have video, needs no addtional storage, unlikely to be conned by seller (prices are fairly standard and easily found out)

When you have worked for a longer period of time and have savings and have convinced yourself that you love taking pictures for fun, you could always buy a dSLR then (which will be more high tech, more features) prob somewhat cheaper, and more affordable :)

The S90 then will still not be wasted, cos it will be a very fine 2nd body to bring along for travels or for family/friends to play with and you have had tons of fun with it !!!

Cheers, have fun with the search for a camera .... :)

Thanks. I just read all of the above replies. And as I already said, I'm getting myself a Canon itself. I am not even considering a Pentax or Sony because I have never seen anybody use a Penatx DSLR. For Sony, last Saturday was the first time ever that I saw somebody shooting with a Sony DSLR. I believe Canon must be better since it is more expensive and way more people use it. I always go for quality and not price. And I think the Canon 450D is a fair enough DSLR to start with. I'm trying to get the best Canon possible that is within my budget.

My budget for a body is $700 and I have considered the costs of the lens, filter and dry cabinet also. It should be around $300-$400 extra for all those. That is why I am going for a 2nd hand one and not a new one because a new one would cost me an extra $200 which I don't have right now.

And yeah, somebody said earlier that if I was broke after I bought the DSLR, I wouldn't be happy. I don't see any sense in that. I saved my money for this DSLR. I always do this whenever I really want to buy something that is out of my budget, I save. So, instead of being unhappy because I am broke or whatever, I will be happy that i finally have a DSLR after saving my money. And I think I will take better care of my camera than some of you here do since I know what all I did to afford a DSLR.

bad idea justifying your decision haha

i can tell you now that soon will come replies from each little "representative" for each brand citing away the good bits of each little brand and ultimately turning into one big flamefesttt

if theres one thing i've learnt being a member of CS its dont bother justfying what you do, just do it.

we now await the coming storm... haha

lol I didn't anticipate that! Let's wait and see! But yeah, like someone said in one of my earlier threads, you need to like the brand first before even considering what model to buy. And it so happens that I really like Canon and I won't consider anything other than Canon. Or at the very least maybe Nikon because there are a hell-load of people out there who use Nikon.

hi, that is a very sad reason for you.

i use a pentax, and i feel mildly insulted, but then again, it's fine. most people who base their buys on "what the crowd does" tend to be of a certain sort.

as for whether pentax dslrs can produce good pictures, i don't know, but i'm quite happy with some of mine. cheers.

btw, i have never seen someone using a condom irl before, so next time i will not use one for sure, it must be bad.

females should stop using menstrual pads or tampons, same logic.

they should BBB ipad for that purpose, expensive must be good.
