go 40D or 50D. let's you swap lenses with your wifes 400D.
youy just want good pictures right? then FF or crop does'nt matter at all. what's important is your convenience and your wifes convenience.

be practical.

get a 5D and then a 24-70 2.8 (just slightly more than an F4).

i've travelled extensively with a 1D+24-70 and i can safely say that it's almost the only lens that you'll ever need.

but anyway, on my next month-long trip, i'm ditching the 24-70 and bringing 3 primes and a 5D instead just for kicks. want to travel "light" in the sense that i'd not be holding onto the heaviest (and one and only) setup all the time, and that whenever i want to switch lenses i'll do it.

troublesome perhaps, but might be rewarding. not sure. :P

but for you, yeah just 5D+24-70 and you'll settle everything really. 24mm is really wide on a full frame.

might be a good idea to consider renting the body and purchasing the lens, vice versa
or any combination of the options.

I think perhaps purchase the UWA, rent 5D mk1 as a possible option. that way, you
can own the lens early while wait out to save $ for a body upgrade.

I do believe that we have a clubsnap member who rents camera lenses and bodies.
can't quite remember the contact now though.

hope this helps :-)

:)

Thanks for the suggestions!

I had a feel of the 2nd hand 5D yesterday, but everyone in the shop was harping on why i'm getting a 2nd hand camera, and edging me to get a new 5DmkII (with the better color reproduction from the Digic IV sensor, great screen etc). Even when i mentioned i have a budget constraint, they suggested for me to get a 50D instead, as it is Digic IV compared to 5D's Digic II, as well as the screen, and confidence of owning a new set as compared to 2nd hand where you don't know the history of the camera. Everyone is kind of discouraging me from getting a 2nd hand 5D...

Is the difference in the Digic IV vs Digic IV sensor that great a consideration to offset the benefits of full frame?

Does the improvement of LCD screen for 5DmkII/50D over 5DmkI matter that much to you as a photographers? I guess it is to allow us to preview our shots and make necessary adjustments in settings?

LCD wise, I check mainly the histrogram, so doesn't really make a dfifference to me. Maybe you can rent the shortlisted cameras, see which one you really want.
