wow, so many helpful replies! hahaha thanks alot bros! yup, i am renting the 24-70 today for a trial, but the weather is not doing me any good. sigh. personally, i lean a little towards the 24-70. but, thats just after reading the reviews. i do agree that having the extra reach during holidays would be rather helpful, as i have experienced. weight-wise, i feel it SHOULD not be a problem as i've been working out very regularly. perhaps, going with the either, and a proper WA lens like 10-22 would totally replace my 17-85.
however, i am just a very normal photog. composition skills and such not that good. i feel getting such an expensive lens wont make it any better, albeit having better IQ.

Hi TS, I also a normal photographer. Since I'm thought I will never go to pro, I'm very consent about budget, especially when I start this hobby; I still depend on my family. Although now I have my own income, I also try not to waste so much money on this hobby, but in other side I always try get the best (lenses). Almost 2 years play with 3rd party lenses (Sigma), I found the quality also not bad. Even, you can try search for google that some website compare 24-70L vs Sigma 24-70 in favor of Sigma. I believe similar quality also can be found in another 3rd party brands: Tamron, Tokina, etc. They are cheaper because they are 3rd party, not because of lower quality.
Thats my strategy, spend as low as I can, but get the best that I can.

@ chicklit, thanks for the advice. gonna read up on sigma 24-70 too. 
Oh, forgot to mention, my Sigma 24-70 is an older version, without HSM. AF slower, but I can live with it. The time when I bought this lens, Canon 24-70L is (almost) 4 times prices of Sigma. Not sure now. You can check photography-on-the.net forum. I study lot of things there before make a purchase.
