just the 24-70L is enough. very versatile. just consider two factors. if you need more bokeh in your shots and don't require telephoto to get them, just the 24-70L will do. :)

hi TS,
since your thread is about choosing 24-70L or24-105L, i would say is ok to have L lens. 105L have IS, its good to wif yr 500d for video shoot. and its max focal range will be nearly 190mm. 70L is huge and 2.8 is good for indoor and bokeh, so these two L lens will caught people eyes as well, good to show off sometime. since lady have their LV, we photog should have L lens. yr trip to dvelop countries such as japan, korea, usa ,europe is good o bring the Ls, but not 3rd world, ppl grab or rob those wif exp gears. so u should consider wat to bring or not to. no matter wat lens it is, the most important is do u enjoy the shoots and produce high Q images.

well, I will say good built stuff eg. body or lens can be a very good defense weapon...

ha ha, its a costly one too:think:
smashing a 500d +24-70L , wow $$$$$ flying away:bheart:
egnaro would u try on yr 7d+24-105L??????

haha sure. will rent when i have the time. kinda busy with studies. dont get your hopes too high though! haha, im just a casual enthusiast.

go slow, my shot also like dunno wat... practice makes perfect. i'm learning everyday too... :embrass:

yeah, i would be going eastern europe. tentatively its prague, italy, paris, germany. so, i guess safety isnt really that bad compared to other countries, like india thailand perhaps?

hmmm, it really seems that getting a L lens might not be a good idea. while i do support getting the original, 3rd party is fine. nonetheless, i am renting those lenses to try them out first. tml might see me renting the 24-70L first for a day, just to test the weight and IQ. :)

17-55 efs is really a wonderful lens and pretty "rugged" too, even though it's not an 'L' lens. (Based on my experience)
17-55 is actually the sweet spot for cropped sensors but it didn't qualify as an L lens because the requirements for being L is being full-frame. A FF 17-55 f/2.8 IS will go for nowhere around $1,600. $3000+ is more likely. Also because of ths it didn't become L so I guess Canon decided there was no need to make it weather proof or it will just affect the sales of their L line.

Between the 2, I'd vote for 24-105. Image Stabilization, longer reach and lesser weight IMHO wins it over for travel photography. Not sure about you, but majority of my travel shots are f4 and below.. as I feel I have to capture the "travel" atmosphere (i.e. landscapes, cityscapes, surroundings etc). IOW, I hardly find a need for creamy bokeh (@ f2.8) while travelling.

PS: I've played with a 24-70 before and really it's freaking heavy.

:Later,

@pinoy, good point.

hmmm, have been reading reviews all over the internet. quite a few have said that if given a choice of only ONE lens, they would choose the 24-105.

24-105 is a good walk around lens and IS rocks!

played with both lens by renting...but in the end...the longer reach and IS of 24-105 wins...plus, it helps that this lens is cheaper and lighter. perfect for travel use. oni need to bring one lens (that is super light load lar) or 2 (with a 10-22mm) to complete the holidaying range...

seriously if I have no choice, I will before I lost everything including 7D+24-105L

i belong to the 24-70 camp. lol.

hmm... I still prefer the quality of 24-70. i just came back frm java using 2 cams and 5 lens. LOL. but mainly i use 24-70 and 10-22. i guess weight is part and parcel of a photog if u want those stunning pics! haha.

if u really want to walk ard, f2.8 is pretty impt although it is still nt sufficient when in low light condition. hmm... maybe its just me, lol... i don't like to increase iso. normally lens that are more versatile in focal length are less sharp.

as for IS, so far none of my lens has IS, i find it pretty irritating sometimes with IS... haha. but its just me. :)

anyway... i suggest u rent ur lens first and see which suits u best. :)
drop paradigm a PM... he can help u out!

so its

24-70 f/2.8L vs 24-105 f/4L
sharper vs longer reach
heavier vs lighter
bigger aperture vs image stabilisation
more expensive vs more affordable
fixed barrel length vs barrel extension when zooming (and yes i've come across a friend's 24-105 that creeps.. badly)

let's get the list going :)

You should edit your list first... this info is totally wrong

I just got myself a 24-70L as well, it's my first zoom other than my 17-40L, other than that I'm a prime whore!

And like the TS, I struggled with the 24-105 vs 24-70 issue for a loooong time!

This is especially so since it's such a large investment to make. ;)

In the end I went with the 24-70L reason being I want that extra bit of f2.8.

I suggest you try out both lenses and see which one suits you the most. If you can, try to find a copy of the "Canon 1dmk3 Super Book", there's quite an in depth comparison of both lenses inside. It documents that while the 24-105 is sharper, the 24-70 has nicer bokeh given the f2.8 and a more pleasing contrast.

Good luck, to tell you the truth you can't go wrong either way!

Yes, just opposite way of zooming for 24-70... stays at tele end and zoom out to wide end

i think the only 24-70 that doesn't extend while zooming or focusing is the tokina ones.

I've always wondered how the bokeh compares for the 2 lenses at their shallowest DOF – 24-70 @ 70mm f/2.8 vs 24-105 @ 105mm f/4.0. Has anyone tried both and done comparison?
