Hi,
if yr dslr in future is the 5D2 class and above, than L lens will give u good colors. 500D no need that edge. tat how canon poison ppl to go FF.LOL.

Hi,
I never used 24-70L b4, but 24-105L on my 40D and 5D2. Its a bit tight in 40D, now i only mount 24-105 on 5d2. For 40D i usually use my 17-40L which is cheap and good, just my own preferrance. You should sell yr 17-85 and get EFs17-55 or wait for tammy 17-50 wif IS for canon to come out. these are the 2 most top medium zoom for crop dslr.

Not only Canon poison peoples go to FF ;) But actually I'm one of the victim.
Hi TS, just share with you, previously I owned 2 L(ux) lenses (17-40 f4, 70-200 f2.8 non IS), but replace this 2 lenses with 3rd party lens. And I feel the quality is equal (or more) than L(ux) lenses. But yes, when you sell your L(ux) lenses, you still maintain a good price (I sold my 17-40 only cheaper 80$ from the price I paid before, stll 8-9 months warranty, plus buyer got B&W UV filter).

I know you only listed the L lenses as your choices, but bearing in mind that you are going for a holiday, maybe you should think about a wider lens such as the 10-22 EFS. Paired with the 17-85, it would cover the widest and weakest focal length of the 17-85. The 17-85 can give fine pictures if used well. Think carefully about the kind of shots you wish to take. Most holiday snaps are wide angle ones. Adding a 24-70/105 duplicates your current set up (albeit at higher quality). Adding a 10-22 will give you more focal lengths to choose from.

A heavy camera bag is horrible when you are carrying lots of luggage on a holiday. I traveled with a 24-105 and 17-50 Tamron (I didn't have a 10-22 then) and was cussing the weight of the lenses+ cam+ flash when I had to carry the backpack and suitcase over long distances in Tokyo. I'd carry a 10-22 and 17-85 if I went again with your set up.

@tyho, yeah im pretty pleased with the 17-85 lens, at least its much better than the kit 18-55 one. you're right, do need to consider a wide-angle.

TS, like what many of the rest have suggested, try shooting with the Tamron 17-50 if you have a chance. (You can actually rent it for a day for $10-20+ dollars) You will then start to appreciate the colours and sharpness it can give for its price. For a cropped body, the range it covers is pretty decent and very good for walk around lens. Consider a 10-22 lens if you are into taking wide landscapes. Else, at its widest range @17mm, it should suffice for most circumstances. That is, if you are seriously considering 3rd party lenses.

Hi,

I'm also a user of Tamaron 28-75 f2.8 and I would like to recommend this lens to you. It is light and sharp at wide open. Filter size is 67mm and this means cheap CPL and UV filter for you.

Also can be used on FF camera. The focusing is slower than Canon Ls but I can live with that.

Regards,

for me, I am for the 24-70 anytime. I can't live without 2.8, especially to take pix of my kids. :) I have no problem lugging it with my 5D2 for 5hrs at a go and shooting 70-80% of the time.. but this is just me.

To each its own, why not you go and rent and see what meets yr needs in all extreme condition.

renting a L lens would put you to decide which lens you want to get, also can have a feel abt the weight when u shot for few hours.

hmmm, very good idea. but i dont know where to rent lenses. any place to intro?

looking forward for ur pic with L lens...

haha sure. will rent when i have the time. kinda busy with studies. dont get your hopes too high though! haha, im just a casual enthusiast.

for 500D (or any other APS-C), i'd recommend the 17-55mm EF-S f/2.8 over either lenses.

i agree wif havocidal. If $$ is not issue, Ef-s17-55f2.8 IS(around $1600) is the best for its class. tammy 17-50 f2.8 is best value, only problem wif tammy is it slow in AF than canon lens. Hope the tammy IS version for canon coming out soon. but the $$$ shall go up too. however it will still cheaper than the EFs17-55.
If u get either one of the above, its way better then the 17-85 from 17 to 50 at all range,.
of coz not the zoom range.

17-55 efs is really a wonderful lens and pretty "rugged" too, even though it's not an 'L' lens. (Based on my experience)

hi TS,
since your thread is about choosing 24-70L or24-105L, i would say is ok to have L lens. 105L have IS, its good to wif yr 500d for video shoot. and its max focal range will be nearly 190mm. 70L is huge and 2.8 is good for indoor and bokeh, so these two L lens will caught people eyes as well, good to show off sometime. since lady have their LV, we photog should have L lens. yr trip to dvelop countries such as japan, korea, usa ,europe is good o bring the Ls, but not 3rd world, ppl grab or rob those wif exp gears. so u should consider wat to bring or not to. no matter wat lens it is, the most important is do u enjoy the shoots and produce high Q images.
