Well.. it's mostly like that here in the US, particularly if you buy from authorized retailers.

is it safe to get the current model now ? there seems to be other problems mentioned to on these lens.

Yes, it is. That was 3 years ago.

The problem was fixed years ago, and current models do not exhibit this problem. Unless you get a lens with a date code of less than UT1000.

Oh my... thread reviver. Hahaha...

well credit to him for using the search function though.

there are still some reports stating that there are some problem with the ring etc.

Reviews for 24-105 have been disspointing. Distortion at wide and mediocre sharpness at telephoto not befitting an expensive "L".

Would anyone recommend I upgrade my 28-135 to 24-105 if I buy a FF DLSR?

(I've read the luminous landscapes comparison but am hoping someone else can provide some first hand experience)

i thought it was supposed to be a great lens...

Well, if you want a range from around 28mm to 100mm, a constant aperture (not necessarily important for me), weather-sealing and IS, then you pretty much only have one choice. Quality control on the 24-105L is supposed to be better than that of say, the 24-70L where there's frequent complaints about 'soft copies'. The 24-105L I used in the past was excellent at the wide end and softer at the long end. The other weaknesses are of course the barrel distortion at the wide end as you've already noted, plus the vignetting on a FF sensor which I found to be visible even at f/8.

That said the range is just about perfect as a walkaround on a FF camera and on an APS-C camera it works excellent as a candid lens for more closeup portraits from a distance. The price dropped a fair deal since its initial introduction into the market. I'd say it's certainly fair value for money.

Back in the days when I had it, I could truly slap it on my 1Ds and photograph a wide variety of subjects. Plus the entire setup was weather-sealed and operation was trouble free even when it was snowing here in Australia...I got some fun photos of family and relatives while tumbling about in the snow. Complete weather-sealing is not a feature to be underestimated, IMHO...if your purpose is to worry more about getting the shot than the safety of your gear, weather-sealing will be important to you.

Canon website already post up the notices ...

"Abnormal images on EF24-105mm f/4L IS USM lenses"
http://support-asia.canon-asia.com/index.jsp?fuseaction=support&prod_type=lenses_notice

I'm also using this lens but not sure affected or not.
This was the flare issue posted YEARS ago.. Don't have to beat a dead horse la. Those 24-105s with lens code UT1000 (Oct 2005) and later have all been rectified directly from factory, so won't exhibit this problem.

BTW, anyone got an 'unfixed' 24-105L? I'm prepared to buy... :bsmilie:

Thanks for your input, fword. :)

Weather sealing is certainly something I haven't yet enjoyed.

I suppose what I need to know is whether the 24-105 represents a significant upgrade in image quality compared to the 28-135 which I already own.
