20D @ $2581 in KL

Back to topic... I went with my cousin to pick up his 20D last week. RM5,600 body only, in KL.

Hahaha! That wouldn't be possible if there was no trade in. You see, the dealer cost is above RM5600, so no way was he gonna sell below cost. However, the trade in price is ridiculously low for a 300D. The going rate is about RM2800, minus RM200 or so for the lens. So infact, he bought the 20D at a higher price than if he was to sell his 300D privately and buy at retail price! :nono:

That's why I said the dealer probably had some latitude with the trade-in.

Second hand price of RM 2,800 for a 300D kit minus the RM200 you say for the lens=RM2,600 according to you.

I don't think many people would pay that price for a one year old 300D Body only just out of warranty. If you check out FTZ, someone's selling a 3 month old 300D kit (27th Sept.) at your price RM2,800. And hey, Desmond is selling a Canon EOS300D kit with BG-E1 battery pack for RM2900 (22nd. Sept)

Figure that he gave RM2,100 to my cousin for the 300D, then marks up RM100 profit or whatever he wants for this one year old camera, I don't care, its out of our hands. The trade in sounds fair to me! Especially since it saved my cousin the trouble of selling it himself.

I just called Jeff at Leos, and asked him what the price is for a 20D body without trade-in... and he said RM5,700.

So I was right that he had a bit of latitude with the trade-in of my cousin's one year old 300D. He covered the RM100 difference with the sale of the second hand 300D. How much more he made, if any, I don't know.

Matt2004, you were right too but perhaps not to the degree so frighteningly portrayed in your post above! . The question now is, do you think the trade-in price of RM2,100 for a one year old 300D body out of warranty is still ridiculously low? I'm not picking on you, just trying to find out what the market price is for used stuff. Matt? Anyone?:dunno:

More stock coming for him only mid-Oct. And if you want to trade-in... he is ever-willing, so he says, but he has to see your camera and determine what condition its in before he can tell you how much its worth, TO HIM. Remember, he becomes a second-hand dealer if he takes a camera off you... not an END-USER.. so he'll be giving you a price he can markup on.

Volvoc304, what a few CSers might tell u is that whether "the trade-in price of RM2,100 for a one year old 300D body out of warranty is still ridiculously low?" is that...why justify the deal the deal has already been done. Spend more time shooting~ Ok, if u're not trying to justify the deal, then the B&S section will give u a good idea of the price for used stuff. For a 300D, its between SGD$900-1300.

All camera bodies are only warrantied by Canon in the country of purchase. Lenses however carry international warranty.

By the way, Canon Malaysia just got a big second batch shipment of 20D this week!

I think if it's convenience your cousin wanted, then yes, it's a fair trade. I know how difficult it is to sell dslr bodies privately. I was only implying that if saving money as much as possible is the priority, then he could have done better.

Btw I still think 2100 is too low. Add 150 for kit lens (new) and it's 2250. I think you might be able to sell privately at 2400-2600 (with the new lens)

Thanks for the opinion. I note that you trade a bit on FTZ so your perception of 2nd hand prices in M'sia would be closer to the mark than comparing SGD prices here on CS.

As I mentioned above, Jeff is selling the 20D Body for RM5,700. That means with the trade-in deal he cut my cousin, he had to markup at least RM100 on the 300D Body to meet his own selling price on the 20D, and then a bit more to make the trade-in worth his while. That would bring it close to the private sale value you state above.. minus lens.

Ah well.... both parties are happy

i have just came back from canon (keppel bay)
checked with the people there.... lenses with even malaysia warranty answer is Yes.... but they need to see the receipt and the warranty card when u send in for service... coz for lenses is international...

but as for the digital body... sadly the answer is NO>.... they wnt honour at all.... so the thats the sad part!~~
