Sorry bro, that is really naive and simplistic... the car issue locally is more than just voting *** out.
Give some thought to this:
Can we afford to have everyone own a car?
Will we want the kind of jams that Jarkata has?
Is there a viable alternative plan to the COE?

The key is improving mass transport so that we don't rely on cars as much. IMHO, car ownership is not for everyone. That may sound a bit snobbish, but the reality is that we will be stuck in permanent jams if we all aspire to own cars.
Take a cab for days that we need that kind of transport and use the MRT when we can. Or live near your workplace. Final resort, in a tight supply market, save up for an expensive car.

The COE price has gone up far too much, I agree, but whatever replaces it - ballot, and other schemes will either clog up the road or result in profiteering.

Is the traffic congestion problem easing now that we have enforced the COE bidding system? Simplistic is the approach the policy makers used when they wanted you to believe a higher priced CO E will curb the urge to own a car .......

Car population control is necessary. Whoever you vote, no government can produce magic.

Of course COE is not the only solution and definitely not going to solve everything. Among others, improvement on public transport is the most logical way. Take for example, if you drive and works in CBD area, would you drive or take a train 2 stations away for a meeting or drive?

Like it or not, it will have to cost more to drive. I am hoping the public transport be excuse from such cost increase and limit to private cars only. Ultimately, any increase to public transport operating cost will be passed back, if not multiplied to consumers. Just like COE, it helps car dealers to make even more profits.

Update: Checked this and saw the video on Youtube. The story about being poor in his early life may be true - but this statement shows that after he became rich and successful, how he has changed.

An unfortunate thing to say. How can everybody have a car when COE is shooting through the roof. A wise politician would never say this when contesting a BE. No wonder on TV, LHL looked visibly angry and pissed off when he was on stage sitting down next to the candidate.

the discontent stems from exorbitant pricing and taxing of cars without a commensurate quality of public transport.

with quality metrics being ease and comfort of riding on bus , train and walking , coupled with reasonable fares.

Read in the newspaper few days ago IIRC it's about 350K to bring up a child till his working years..... Now how many baby do you want ? The baby bonus is 6k+6k one for one deposite in special account for 1st baby, that's a GREAT HELP ya

So.. not much diff with car ownership. Car + COE is around 200k, plus gas, insurance.. parking.. ERP, almost the same rite

This COE thing was a small monkey that has been allowed to grow into a 800 pound gorilla. When it was small, policy makers thought it was cute. Now it is an out of control monster that erodes the popularity of incumbent.
Worse when a newbie says insensitive things like "Everybody has a car."

I think Singaporeans need a lil bit of perspective. Try to live in cities like Jakarta or Delhi for a year..
after that, then we can complain about owning cars and the public transport.

So why can’t Beijing just clamp down on car ownership? Shanghai, for example, has raised the cost of vehicle license plates to restrict the number of cars on the road.

I do note that based on the article below, the average cost of a license plate in Shanghai is 75K Yuan, which is $15K.
