i'd suggest a tamron 17-50mm f/2.8! cheap and good.

later on, u can upgrade later when u find it limiting ure needs.

save money for other stuff, there are many hidden costs involved, like accessories etc.

D80 +18-135

1) 18-135 is a very good lens for such a low price
2) both 18-135 and 18-200 are good for "walk around" / traveling - how often do you travel?
3) save S$1,000 - you can buy lens for other purpose or flashlight!
4) I started with D80 +18-135, then use 50mm (S$160!) for 80% of the time!
5) then bought 70-300VR and now 16-135VR
6) IMO, 16-135VR and 70-300VR is best combo for me for zoom (instead 1 x 18-200VR).

Good Luck!

16-85mmVR instead of 16-135VR?

OOps... I stand corrected! And that kinda shows how much I still like the 18-135 lens ;-)

It should be 16-85VR and 70-300VR is the best combo for zoom :-p

Me same... but on D40x.. with 18-55mm for starter.. then move on to 50mm F1.8D which have been on my D40x like 70% of the time. Currently just got the 70-300mm VR and budgetting for the 16-85mm VR.

@TS.. get the 18-200mm if you think of convient and does not need anything longer than 200mm.. and if you are unsure... then get the 18-135mm for a start.. cos its cheap.. then find ur nitch.. cos end of the day.. you are unsure of what u want to capture, do not plunge into something so expensive. Save the $$ get flash tripod.. cleaning kit.. strap and a dry cab.. which will last for any future upgrades.

just my 2 cents worth.

Yep... two weeks after I go the D80+18-135 set, I got the 50mm 1.8 as well and been using that for like 90% of the time! And sounds like we share the same shopping list... if that's the case, you need to stand by for the D300 :-p

and don't forget bout dry-box ... ;)

just got mine AD-100 last 2 weeks after my AD-40 goes kaput.

I would think 18-135mm is a better choice for you since you have a budget concern.

I personally am using the 18-200mm. I went through many of my shots, 18-135mm covers 90+% of the focal length of my shots. I hardly need to shoot in the 135- 200mm range, other than in some rare occassions of course.

Unless you shoot more at the long end, otherwise it is not justificable in your case to pay S$1k more to make up the 135mm-200mm, that you might hardly use. And if you shoot more at the long end, then adding a 80-200mm later would be a much better choice. Comparatively, 80-200mm with F2.8 would give you much sharper image, and make up the VR that you need to step up to F5.6 all the way to 200mm on the 18-200mm.

So in my very personal opinion, 18-135 mm should be your choice considering your buying criteria.

After owning a DSLR for a while, if given a chance to buy a new cam set, likely config would be 17-50mm, 70-200mm VR, 50mm. I wont go for a MPV like the 18-200mm any more. Dont get me wrong, it is still a good lens especially the convenience of using just one lens; but just that there are better combinations.

I am now waiting for the 17-50mm Tamron. I will still keep my 18-200mm, but not sure if I will still use it once I have the Tamron.

Hope my input helps.

Just a test with 18-135mm, @F8 1/250 135mm, all auto setting with AP by D300 without any PP, but just resize it for posting. Is this consider sharp?

Erm, no. It is not sharp, especially around the edges and collar. But cute kid.

18-200 definitely.

it's much more fun to use!

yup! agreed! :)

it is 'extremely' flexible lens, especially for travel purposes which requires us to zoom-in and out quickly.

secondly, since we don't need to change the lens frequently (as per my case with 18-70mm and 70-210mm), less 'dust' will go to the sensor ...... :bsmilie:

Hahahaaa.. u are spot on.. planning that as well.. maybe when the price comes down further.. or better things on the comex or PC show.. ;p

I was using 18-135 kit lens previously but sold away to get the 18-200. There's nothing wrong with 18-135. For its price, it is a wonderful lens to cover such a wide focal length. I actually enjoyed using it. :)

I changed to 18-200 because I need the VR for a crisp & steady shots. After using it, it is really a lot fun & gives many creative shots. ;)

Cheers!

Okie, looks like have to pull out the 85mm f1.8 to make a comparison after repair.

Cheers!
