I choose between 17-55 F2.8 and 17-40 F4 L and finally choose 17-40 F4 L due to "plan to upgrade to FF" reason (in the future). This is one of the purchase that I regret since later I found out that 17-55 F2.8 is much better than 17-40 L (this lens not deserve L label, at least in my case). I sold the 17-40 L lens when one of my uni friend lend me her tamron 17-50 (I found this lens much better than my prev 'L' lens), until I purchase my Sigma 24-70 F2.8.

Why not..?

Like I said, it's ONLY based on my experience. There are 2 events took place before I decided to sell my 17-40L. 1st is on one of my classmates' birthday. I took my 17-40, his father also equipped with Canon, actually using older model: 350D but 17-55 f2.8 lens. Days after, when we compare the results I found 17-55 results is better. That time I only think, this is because f2.8. Another event involving another brand of DSLR (which I don't want to specify details here) which I also despised my results, event in 'AUTO' mode.

Hmmm...

I think you must first learn to get out of Auto mode.

There is no denying the 17-55 f/2.8 outperforms the 17-40 f/4L. However, it is MORE important that you first learn how to use the camera in the creative modes. Just my personal sincere advice.

Hi doodah, thanks for your advice.
I shoot 95% in manual mode as I used my 400D for almost 3 years now. In the 2nd event I mention before, to annul photographer's skill from the test, I and my friend (another brand) using AUTO mode.

the photo output from 17-85 is decent, but what annoys me is lens gradually zooms out to the tele end as I walk along with the camera round my neck with the lens slightly pointing down.

yo same thing happens to my 17-55... I dont think its a problem though.. the glass is indeed heavy not to mention the filter hehe...

in terms of quality (picture and build), I go for the 17-55mm
