17-55 vs 15-85 lens

An assistant in a KL canon shop said the 15-85 that comes with the kit is made in Taiwan while a seperately purchased one is made in Japan. Can anyone confirm this?

I actually went to the mentioned site below and seriously wonder if they properly tested the 17-55. I used to own it and it was tack sharp wide open at f2.8. Much sharper than the 15-85 at 15mm f3.5. In fact, it is sharper than most prime lens I have encountered. I am sure most owners of the 17-55 would be surprised at the sample comparison posted.

Normally for crop we would not hesitate to recommend the 17-55 but this 15-85 is turning out to be a rather good lens. It seems that it beats the 17-55 at its entire range even though it is wider at 15mm, albeit at smaller apertures.

Furthermore it has a wider focal range. So if you need an effective focal range of 24-136mm this seems like an excellent choice. It is also cheaper and lighter.

I bought it seperately and it is made in Taiwan. hmm.

i agree with you. 17-55 is really sharp. perhaps the test was conducted in too close a distance. the writer for the noted website have pointed that 17-55 doesn't like close distances and that is very true too.

Hi, how much you bought the 50 f/1.4? In your opinion, is it worth to go for this or f/1.8? I am thinking of getting a prime to complement my 15-85, for low light usage.

TS - apologies for the OT....

Wouldnt a 30 1.4 , 28 1.8 or 35 2 be a better substitute for indoor usage (for a crop body) ?
Smack between the standard 17-55 zoom range of a crop body. 50mm is a bit long for indoors.

the sigma 30 f/1.4 have inconsistent focusing. the 28 f/1.8 is known to be poor on the corners for a prime. 35 f/2 is the best solution...unless u dun mind the 50 f/1.4. 50 f/1.4 gives u better bokeh than the 35 f/2. but in this, u have to get used to 50mm on a crop body. but i think its ok. its like 80mm on the FF...which is great for not interrupting your subjects (if u shld ppl like family etc.) indoors. that's why lens of this focal length is well received by professional wedding photogs. in my opinion...if u can't afford the L glass but u want to be able to shoot at f/2 and have your images turn out sharp...50 f/1.4 is the way to go. its a good value fast lens. really fast lens i mean.

Forget about the comparison as it is not at the same aperture. If you are happy with it then it is sharp enough.

17-55 with f2.8 is a faster lens so for sports photography generally better just that it may not have the reach of 15-85. With a 7D body which can get good IQ even at high ISO, for indoor sports maybe should get 70-200mm f4L instead. ;p

i rented the 15-85, and it is really really sharp! unfortunately the build isn't up to standard. from 24-50mm there's zoom creep although the zoom ring feels smooth and tight. i guess the elements inside are really heavy. and yes this lens is heavy, especially so when u pair it with 500D - it feels pretty unbalanced. 17-40 + 500D feels more balanced. i rented the 17-40 too...and i have to say that the 15-85 produced sharper images. u can juz keep zooming in and in on the shots you take with that lens. but i think that's really too crazy, i doubt any normal shooter will do that - hardcore pixel peeping. it's redundant. 17-40 may not match up optically (it's pretty close, but not on par). CA is more noticeable on the 17-40...in fact, much more noticeable. however, the 17-40 trumps in terms of build. can tell this lens is build to last. weather-sealed, internal zooming (with the filter on) & tough metal body to match. it's one tight solid piece of glass. on the other hand, the 15-85 is like an air pump...u can feel the suction and expulsion of air from behind. it's a pump, no doubt. i really doubt the 15-85 being able to last 4 years...the zoom creep is already there right from the start...imagine after 4 years of usage and millions of pumping action. I don't know, but in my opinion i doubt it'd be able to tahan heavy usage.

so in the end, i think i'm going for the 17-40L for the build.

Sorry to highjack your thread TS, but I am having the same dilemma

I have the 18-55 and the 60MM Macro. I would like upgrade from the kit lens to the 15-85. What would be the perfect low light prime which can go with this lens? Especially on a Crop Camera?

My choices are

EF 28MM F2.8 (Low price but only 2.8)
Sigma 30MM F1.4 (Excellent but expensive with QC issues also)

PS : 35MM F1.4L would be my dream lens. But its out of my budget:bigeyes:

:)

28 1.8 - only decently sharp in centre and has quite poor colors. otherwise, it's the only wide angle Canon with this large an aperture for <$1000

30 1.4 - good lens if you find a good copy.
