1)if only digital: 17-55
2)if digital and film: 17-35 (one thought here: Many liked the idea of FF support but never get around to use it.)
3)if you love wides:12-24 (Do not think the 17-xx can replace the 12-24 for wides, it cannot

Pros:
1) sharp (on par with the 70-200)
2) cheaper than 17-55
3) Pro built
4) light
Cons:
1) lens extends at wide :thumbsd:
2) zoom ring too near (this is a really really silly oversight from the nikon engineers)
