hi, does anyone know where i can find 120mm spooling reels? been busy of late to really check out ruby and peninsular.

and how much does it cost? thinking of developing my own b&w at home using a changing bag. printing wise.. no choice. photolab or scan already.

As for the spooling reels, u mean the reel in the developing tanks? Usually those plastics ones allow you to vary the size from 135 to 120. If u need the 120 film spools, i have some, but i think that is not what you want?
As for printing, i think a cheapo way is to shoot the negatives under a light box, they give pretty consistent results.

yea i'm planning to get a patterson super system 4 and have been trying to find out online how to adjust the developing reels.

could you help by describing? :) as for the light box idea, i'll keep it in mind! :) thanks. or maybe i'll just join safra photo club to use their enlargers.

This is the type i got from ruby. Do have a look. Notice there are different grooves for different film formats.

Yeap, I jus adjusted the reel only. :)

Thanks for the pics. I will also try it next time.

BTW - can the reel take in 2 rolls of 120 film at a time? i.e. after reeling in one, continue with next roll. Just to save time is processing. ;)

The reel can only take one 120 roll.

I went to buy spares from Ruby, but the ones in the photos are out of stock !%#^ Ended up with some from Paterson, simpler design without the guide, still ok.

Better buy some spares, especially when developing several. Even a slightly damp plastic spiral (like when attempting to use the same spiral previously just used and wiped) can wreak havoc in mounting the film, as I have learned, the hard way ...

BTW, these from Ruby don't fit in my Jobo tank (extended to take 2 120 rolls) ! It fits in those sold at Ruby, though.

Can I just post a side rant about the 120 film? :P Is it just me or is it a pain with getting the 120 film on the reel? I always had a difficult time trying to get the film off the paper and then onto the reel as the tip has quite the curl on it! Ok, maybe it's just me...:bsmilie:

I on the other hand have more problems with 35mm film, never had any problem at all with 120mm, so easy ...

Jobo reel can take two 120 film in with a supplied stop between each roll,Jobo tank uses less chemicals, two roll of 135 need only 485ml of chemical to work with, penterson use 650ml.

did u have any luck adjusting the paterson reel to fit 120 mm film. i have been trying to do so for days. cannot figure it out!!!

Very very true...

But one way around it is to blast the reel (after the first roll) with a hair dryer for say 5-10mins till it's nice and toasty... then there shouldn't be any stuck issues.

Also check the ball bearings make sure they are jiggling around smoothly, most of the time it's the damn ball bearing that jams up everything. But still from experience it's moisture that jams up the neg when spooling.

Be prepared to screw up your first roll, I think many of us did. So don't spool something important on the first run, practice first.

Good Luck! :)

Hold one side firmly, turn the otherside anticlockwise until the spool unlock. Then lengthen the spool along the grooves in the axis. You have to go by feel. When you reach the 120mm point, turn one side of the reel clockwise to lock. If the whole thing is too tight, you may want to soak it in soapy water for a few minutes then try again.

thanks fastshot. the soapy water really helped! just in case anyone else is having that problem, to loosen the reel you need to turn it clockwise, and to tighten it u turn it counter clockwise... at least with my reel, which is a Paterson Super System 4 auto load reel!
