I have been monitoring ebay for the past 1 week. I realised this peculiar group of sellers who priced their 10Ds ard US$1000 to US$1200 with a "Buy It Now" option. However, that option is only open to "qualified" buyers and to be qualified, you have to email the seller. Interestingly, such auctions are taken down within a day.

I managed to get in contact with one of the sellers and this is what he proposed instead of going thru the ebay system. His reasoning is that his proposal is fairer and faster. I have included an excerpt on his email. Would like to hear comments from you guys. Is it a trap or bargain? :dunno:

Hi
_
Look here all the details I think you need to close this deal quick and succesfully. The buy it now price for the product is $1000 US.I have more than one product for sale and you can buy my product without winning the auction.
_
I'm sales representative for US corporation that trades with it
products and since the beginning of January I'm working for its spanish branch. Right now l'm located in Malaga(country:Spain) and here I met my source directly in the factory. Product: I can get both PAL and NTSC format. The product is brand new, factory sealed with ALL the accesories. The worldwide warranty provided is for one(1) year parts and labor. It will come with the receipt from the authorized dealer and there will be no problem for you to use the warranty. Shipping: l will ship via UPS but you can choose other mail carrier .It usually takes 48 hours till the package arrives to your door. l will cover the shipping and insurance costs.

Payment: l'm a serious seller with more than 2 years of experience in this field. l'm a fair trader and my feedback- which l'm sure you have seen- is the proof that l have closed a lot of sucessful deals.
During this period I learned that the best deals are closed when the risk involved is minimum. You will arrange payment trough_ western union
.........
Look what I can do for you:
-you will make the transfer to my location(or any adress from my town) but not to my name(you willuse your best friends name for example as receiver's name) and you will give me the transfer's details and I will verify it and if it is ok(the all amount was sent)I will send you the product imediately.
-only after you will receive the product and check it if it ok you will
have to change the destination of the transfer to my name.So untill you will have the product in your hand's the money will be on your best friend's name.
.........
This is the fastest way to conclude this deal and the same time is a method with no risks involved for you and I think also for both of us.I have used the procedure. I have already described to you for many times each of my customers being satisfied and I have to admit that it is most efficient process to_go trough.

Return policy:In case you'll change your mind after receiving the package and want to cancel the order you'll ship it back and retreive the money from western union. Also in case the delivery does not arrive on time please email me and I'll contact the mail carrier.

Last note: I have checked his rating on ebay and its 181 (pretty good) but the problem is he gets most of his ratings by buying, not selling.

Not reliable... This could be a hijack ebay account. :dunno:

whoever trades with Western Union is already suspicious enough. Once when you make payment, there is no guarentee for you that the product that you buy would come to you.

This individual does not protect the buyer in any form or fashion.

Negative, warning, danger.....

Keep your money in your own wallet.

The thing I dun understand is how can the seller get the payment if the receiver's name and address are fake?

If my guess is correct, the seller is now pestering you to transfer the money over, right?

I heard too many cases like that already.....

the whole thing just sounds dodgy. Don't be blinded by the "cheap" price.

If its for real he should let u transact through e-bay & there is no need to pay thru Western Union.

Rofl ask him if he will send u the Cam then u post the $$$ to him :P

western union sounds really really suspicous...lots of horror stories on WU.

For Western Union, I think all u need is the verification number to withdraw the money.

Same modus operandi as the Yahoo! Classifieds scams. Do not fall for it.

This is a FAMOUS trick. Don't fall for it.

This is DEFINITELY a fake. It follows the same MO as all the other fakes. Send it via Western Union. Send it under someone else's address. And they will ALWAYS say:

"Trust Me"..

I always never ever trust anyone who says that. The BS alarm goes off whenever i hear that...

Ask to do it through www.escrow.com No other escrow services.

Chances are, you'll never hear from that guy again.

Rule of the Thumb: Things that sound too good are often too good to be true.;)

This has SCAM written all over it. There were previous cases of F100, F5 and big-time lenses going for a song and the seller used the same modus operandi. Basically like what the others have said, "If it sounds too good to be true, IT ISN'T!" In any case, the preferred method of buying used cameras and lenses is always to (at the very least) handle the goods before getting it, best is to be able to shoot a few rolls through it before committing.
