Canon makes good camera. I am sure. And this illustrated the nice and natural colour tones.
My only suggestion is to crop it tighter. Especially the empty ground took up 1/4 of the space...crop it close to the feet of the cranes...
And it would also nice if bro could crop away the bright sky on top...I think it would have nicer effect.;p

This photo was actually taken at 4pm Hokkaido time in winter (Sg time around 7+pm) with no flash used with 18-55mm kit lens @ 55mm and ISO of 800, handheld. Only sharpening done in PP. Who says 1000D is not a good camera?

Bro, I think its the rule of 3rd thing again. Choosing between the sky and the flooded ground..which is more important to you? May be you can try 2 versions one showing 70% of sky and the other showing 70% of the grass... you know? shift the horizon down or up.

Yes bro. That is Dragan effect. But Dragan is more suitable for old people portrait. Not so suitable for young children or environmental shot.

Getting there bro. Do read up on the standards for taking portraits. Though there are no rules perse, there are certain techniques that determine whether your portrait stands out from the rest.
Focus on the eyes, you got it. But i find the rest of the face abit too OOF. But was it your intention? It'd be better if the whole face was sharp, AND focal point on the eye. And the cropping is too tight. Should keep the rest of the head and the chin. But skin tone seems right.
Anyway, handsome kid.

bro, i'm using 50mm 1.8 and I always have this problem that while shooting crop photos (close up), i cant get the whole subject in focus. Tried to increase to f2.8, improves a bit... i think if i increase to f5.6, defeat the purpose of having a f1.8 lens, right (i dunno)... how to rectify this problem?

use flash. lol.. Serious when you use external flash no problems of going up to f8 and shutter 1/60.
