hmm i think the question was whether it was using MF or AF. Selecting focus point manually would mean that the AF was used.

Is that right? Anyway I was using MF

I believe he selected focus point manually, but used AF (auto-focus) to lock focus.
Correct me if i'm wrong bro fleaz.

Everything manual

the image is a little small to really pixel-peep. assuming you used the 1000D .. did you already resize the image or cropped it?

The images were resized. Here's a 100% crop:

#1 f1.8

#2 f4

I'm guessing need to factor in the noise from ISO1600. I will test the lens further and see what I get.

I guess everyones perception of sharpness is different. But I would consider those images pretty okay in terms of sharpness. The first shot was at 1.8 so need to give it a little leeway. The second shot was much better at f/4. Not sure if this is even a factor but the focus point chosen for the 2 shots also differ in that in the first shot .. the focus point is on something that has less contrast than the second one.

By the way .. what software are you using to resize the pics. Cos there is a whole lot of difference in the quality between your original resized ones and the 100% cropped. There are pixelations in the resized ones.

I used Microsoft Paint. I just tried opening the file using GIMP (I don't have Photoshop on this laptop), the same results.

I think difference in quality is due to the resizing process. 3888X2592 resized to 640X480, using the Photobucket uploader, comparing to a 100% crop.

Anyway maybe my eyesight also not so good, cos these 2 shots are taken using MF.

First a disclaimer .. I don't have the 18-55 so I cannot really comment on it ... I do have the 55-250 and it shoots really sharp images. With regards to panning shots, I think what is more important is to have the correct focal length for the situation you are in. The IS and fast apertures probably won't come into play much since you are swinging the camera anyways. For panning shots, technique and timing is more important than the equipment .. just my 2 cents.

What reminder?

Hi I new in Canon. Just got a 1000D which is my first DSLR n SLR.

May I know how to set the DOF in 1000D to take portrait?

read my quote.

He meant that you are posting in the wrong section for critique on photography techniques.
This section is more for technical discussion of the equipment.
Try "Critique Corner" just remember to read the guidelines before posting (its stickied on the top)

hi guys, just attempted to take below sample pic for bokeh effect using 50mm F1.8 on the ametheyist stone. looks sharp with background OOF on the camera LCD screen, but when uploaded to computer, the stone looks a bit blur & very soft.

can advise from experts around here?

I believe it is due to hand shake, therefore it is not clear. You can try increasing the shutter speed, changing to higher ISO or change the aperture to f/1.8 to allow more light in.

Camera Shake.
Use a camera stand combo with 2sec timer, or up the shuttle speed in manual mode.

How to post pics in this forum? I'm quite new here too.
