Among the shots that I hv posted in this series, only #6 I shoot wide open at f1.2
The rest my aperture setting ranges from f1.6 to f2.2..
Other than aperture size, the DOF you get depends on the focal length (longer the shallower) and the relative distance between your lens and the subject, and between the subject and the background. The closer you get to your subject, and the further you separate your subject from the background, the DOF becomes more shallow..
So if you used a 30D with a 1.6x crop factor, you will need to stand further away from the subject in comparison with a FF 5D, thus = more DOF
Similarly, a 50mm is shorter than a 85mm, so same aperture setting will also give you more DOF..
Thus can safely assume that if bokeh is what u r after, the 5D+85 combo will be capable of more shallow DOF than a 30D + 50mm.. That said, however, I hv been using 350D all the while b4 this shoot and the I would say the bokeh is pretty satisfying as well.. you can check my previous postings for reference if necessary..
Very nice pictures and I love the bokeh..
just checking.. for 5D you are using the 85mm F1.8 or F1.2 to get the bokeh?
so for someone with a 30D, if I get the 50mm F1.8 or F1.4, will I get the same bokeh effect?
e.g. 50 x 1.6 = 80mm?
