sometimes you should try to highlight things in a different tone, like have the whole image in sephia or any monotone and highlight your subject. Dont just play with greyskale. thats just my 2cents this is just an example

try go PS and do the auto color adjustment, some image needs to pump up some saturation. IMHO, I think you should try some panning shots

try shooting in RAW with D70 and post process in Photoshop CS with Camera Raw and you'll see the difference..

just to answer the 1dpi myht.. I once did a billboard when I"m in Malaysia, it was those highway huge billboards, and the image file was actually only 1DPI. look at your document size when your doing for print and not your pixel dimension.
