I have the cable release and it can do the half-press focus lock. I was comtemplating which one to get but finally decided to go with the cable release.... I guess what I'll miss will be the convenience of taking self-group photos using the remote from far....

Hmm... can the remote do bulb mode and 'half-press' for AF? If yes, it's great!

If you're thinking of going to for fireworks shooting for the coming weekends, go for the original Nikon cable release for D70s. It's available at MSColor. ;)

Try looking for Florence, I believe she is there at the fair and probably is in-charged of the booth. She should be more knowledgeable and perhaps able to give you a better price. ;) As for the sales people, I believe a lot of the people (including other booths) are temps... they may not be...
