I only had the lens and the body + the diffuser for the built-in flash on hand that day... anyway manual focusing with a torch on hand is not easy (at least for me) when I do not have a tripod with me... :D Thanks for the tip Troy!

I used a diffuser for the built-in flash. This was under the shade of the trees... anything above f8 the viewfinder is too dark on my E-500 to focus on anything... =(
